Why are comments like "use Firefox" okay on Lemmy while "go vegan" is getting downvoted?
  • This is not exclusive to Lemmy, this happens the same way in real life - when you critique their food choice people tend to get in the defensive. This happens whether it's about their health, ecology or ethics and of course it gets worse when you are implying that their choices hurt others.

Of course this is not exclusive to food. Everything that is seen as part of your identity leads to this defensive reaction (see politics, sports teams etc.) and they double down on their current stance. I bet vegans would be a LOT more successful if they would be more empathetic toward non-vegans and would approach this topic more tactically.

why do pharmacies have these signs with whacky animations?
  • Can't really contribute as in Germany most pharmacy signs are pretty static and look kind of like this: https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2014/06/30/20/59/pharmacy-380780_640.jpg

But I also wonder why there's so many pharmacies in France. In almost any city I've been to it's hard to not have a green flashing cross in sight.

Surely "1337" is the same as 1337, right?
  • To me it sounds more like they are explicitly not using floating point but something like a BigInteger (or fixed point Decimal) class backed by a string. Doing any calculations on raw strings sounds like too much pain for sane people, but what do I know.

I don't know why it's not endoded more efficiently, but there could be requirements regarding human readable representations or whatever 🤷‍♂️

"Wie sehr kann ich das Leid von Kindern für meine Propaganda missbrauchen bevor es jemand merkt?"
  • Wieso? Er hat ja durchaus recht mit den technischen Möglichkeiten. Das NOKIA 3210 kann hundert prozentig keine solchen Bilder und Videos öffnen oder machen.

Me wanna inject oil into the ear to look tough (cauliflower ear), thoughts?
  • OR just do some grappling, it's really a lot of fun and just great overall.

But if you just want to fake being a martial artist I recommend just buying a black belt and wearing it everywhere. It's just as stupid, but cheaper and less painful. Or maybe instead of elf ears you can buy cosplay cauliflower ears to wear...🙄

EU-Verordnung: Gewessler will für Renaturierung stimmen
  • Meine Theorie ist, dass die "konservativen" Parteien:

    • Angst haben, dass es ihnen finanziell schlechter gehen könnte als heute
    • nichts tun in der Hoffnung, dass sich dann auch nichts ändert.

‘Crime is out of hand’: how young people turned to far right in east German city
  • What other reason can you name for people being anti immigration when there are zero immigrants in their region? Why do they care?

And regarding talking to conservatives: I do that all the time as (unfortunately) the sports club in which I'm heavily involved is pretty conservative, but I don't see any reason why I should talk to people pushing and voting for Nazis agenda.

Edit: And I believe that it's not unreasonable in itself to try and control immigration. But just maybe beforehand we should stop actively exploiting and destroying their countries*.

*wars, unfair free trading agreements, dumping subsidized food, climate change, dumping garbage...

‘Crime is out of hand’: how young people turned to far right in east German city
  • Because they're manipulated? Because they like easy solutions to complex problems? Because they like to close their eyes and imagine that every can stay the same? Because neoliberal and conservative politicians fucked the lower and middle class while blaming the left (who for the most part weren't even in power) and immigrants? Because German education has neglected teaching critical thinking skills and streamline education to just provide economic value?

Time and time again anti-immigrant tendencies are highest in areas with the lowest amount of immigrants (see the east of Germany). It's just easy to hate people you don't know...

Majority of Americans and Europeans support ending the war in Ukraine
  • The results seem not to be very helpful: Sure I'm also for a negotiated peace in Ukraine as long as the pre 2014 borders are restored and reparations are paid. But how would you differentiate that from a Putin apologist?

Landwirte kämpfen gegen Schnecken - Viele Pflanzen zerfressen

How do you make Linux more popular?
  • Hm it's probably "bundle with the hardware, make sure the hardware really works and there's a price incentive vs Windows".

As long as you have to actively migrate (including backing up, losing access to several commercial apps) and could end up in the situation that your hardware isn't 100% working or you're workflow isn't really supported?
