[Weekly] What are you reading this week? [9/10/23]
  • I read The Circle by Dave Eggers this week. I liked it overall, there were some things I didn't like about the writing but I thought the ending was really good.

Are you able to read in your dreams?
  • Yeah, at least I can remember getting a phone call and looking at my phone and reading the caller ID. I don't think it comes up much though.

The fact that I read the caller ID and thought "oh yeah, that's my 4 year old daughter's lawyer" when I saw the name, that should have been a clue I was dreaming.

What are your preferred news sources?
  • Make sure to support your local news sources too. Lots of great suggestions here for staying up to date with national and world news, but your local newspapers serve a valuable role in keeping up to date on what local governments are doing in your communities, and holding them accountable.

Do you think that there may be random internet posts from today that in the future may be seen on the same level as the writings of Plato or other great philosophers?
  • I bet it'll be

"In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god's blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my intelligence."

Lemmy post just got taken down by bots...
  • Yep, we could load a template to follow but it was just a lot of clicking pixels to change "FARTY" back to "PARTY," rinse, repeat.

How Does Not Having Faith Effect Your Life
  • I agree, I think that a lot of people who are raised that way are afraid to question. Hell is a pretty terrifying consequence for those who believe there's even a possibility that it's true. So I think a lot of them are trying to go through the motions just to rest assured that if they call themselves Christians and followed certain rituals that they're safe.

Deciding I didn't believe in hell was the first step and the rest of my faith quickly unraveled after that.

Do you think Lemmy is going to cover niche topics like this someday?
  • A lot is probably just because of the sheer volume of people over there, whatever the interest was, there'd be plenty of people who were really into that thing. I miss subs like r/whatisthisthing and r/tipofmytongue that worked because just by exposing it to so many people, there was a good chance of coming across someone who was actually familiar with it already.

How do I manage my inbox?
  • I've done something similar, if it's just to me then I have a rule to flag it with tomorrow's due date and I go through them the next morning. If it's only to me, that's one of the most obvious cases where I need to respond. I'm also working on resisting the impulse to check everything as soon as it comes in, and I turned off my email notifications so that's a big help too.

How do I call in to an NPR show?
  • I haven't called in but I've gone to the live recording a couple of times and it's so fun! A lot of the ad libbing got cut when it aired. If you are ever in Chicago on a Thursday I'd recommend it.

  • I'll probably be a lot less likely to downvote here, just because if something is so inflammatory that I'd want to, I probably don't want to draw their attention to me anyway. But I'm glad to know early on.

I don't wanna be so angry on Lemmy like I was on Reddit
  • Yeah, I agree I like the vibe here. And now I'm a decade older than I was when I started reddit so it feels like I'm coming here with a different attitude. On reddit I mostly lurked -- by the time I'd get to a thread there would be so many comments I didn't really have anything to add anyway.
