The thing about the Convention is that it constrains governments, and it constrains the way that governments can treat minorities and people it doesn't like... If we were out of the ECHR, you wouldn't have that constraint

That's why I mentioned Dresden though. The Allies did bomb German civilians in Dresden as part of their efforts to defeat the Nazis, and that attack has been criticised because they harmed civilians, rather than just military targets.

Anyway, if we're going to say that Israel should never have been established by force and forced expulsions of Palestinians, perhaps that is true. I suppose the same can be said about the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand. Therefore maybe Israel should pay compensation to Palestinian families who were affected by forced expulsion.

I see. Personally though if I came across two serial killers, one of whom had killed 5 people, and the other of whom had killed 20 people, I would say both were wrong. I wouldn't say that the killer of 5 people was necessarily a better person. If both of these killers had the same firepower, maybe they both would have killed similar numbers of civilians.

I think it would make sense for Palestine to have an army. If they did have an army, and if that army tried to push the Israeli military out of the West Bank (internationally recognised as Palestine), that might make sense. It is strange that Israel has borders but they've gone beyond them (into the West Bank and into Syria), which is supposed to be illegal, and the West has just been okay with that.

Women and children were killed by Hamas in 2023 right? Also Israelis might be made to train in the IDF but that doesn't mean every Israeli supports an aggressive policy towards Palestinians.

I'm not trying to take either side really - I think both Israel and Hamas should not have killed civilians. You said I should read the history, yeah maybe I should. Palestinians who were forcibly expelled from what is now Israel, maybe they should get compensation from Israel.

I think ethnic cleansing like mentioned in your link is bad. But does that justify Hamas attacking Israeli civilians? You mention liberation from the Nazis - the British and Americans bombed Dresden to try to defeat the Nazis, but they bombed many civilians, which is why some people see that attack as morally bad. The nuking of Japan also killed many civilians, and is also seen as pretty terrible. If attacking civilians in those cases was bad (it probably was) then maybe Hamas attacking Israeli civilians was bad, and Israel attacking Palestinian civilians was bad.

I started reading this but I didn't read all of it. Is it productive to direct this level of hatred towards liberals, when there are many people further to the right on the political spectrum, many of whom hate Greta and hate Palestinians?

I think people do have the right to defend themselves. I don't think Hamas's attack in October 2023 was self-defence though.

To be fair we have seen quite a bit of infighting among right-wingers in the last few years though... first the Tories tore themselves apart over Brexit, then they replaced Cameron with Theresa May, more infighting ensued, then we had Boris, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, and now Kemi Badenoch, and some Tories are saying Kemi won't last long - Jenrick clearly wants to replace her. Then there's Reform, and two of their MPs have now left the party - Rupert Lowe has started his own thing called Restore Britain.

Anyway, I don't know what to expect from Your Party but I would be interested to see what policies they propose.

I remember the crisis in Sudan a number of years ago, the Brits were still stuck there while the Irish had already been evacuated by the Germans on account of the EU. I believe every EU diplomatic mission is actually supposed to support EU citizens regardless of nationality, although possibly in cases where their home country’s mission is inaccessible.

That's cool. I guess Brits will have to go without such benefits for the time being. And if Reform are the next government then the UK's ties to Europe will probably be reduced. I suppose there is time for the public to change their voting intentions before the next election though.

Another advantage of the Irish passport over the British passport is that the Irish passport allows you to live and work in 26 other European countries. But hey ho.

Brit here. I'm surprised the map says "fall" for the UK because I don't think I've ever heard a Brit say "fall" for autumn. I think "fall" is just an American thing, not a British thing. Cool map anyway.

Green energy is good, but I'm sceptical of China's intentions these days. They seem to have a pretty aggressive stance towards other countries, as seen in their handling of the nine-dash line.

I just get the sense that China is less interested in helping the whole world, and more interested in subjugating the whole world.

I've been thinking similar things. Maybe online platforms, including Lemmy, can be a bit unhealthy.

In the real world, if you say something a bit embarrassing in front of one person, they'll probably forget it after a while. Years later, nobody knows you said it. But on Lemmy, if I tell one person my opinion on a topic, that opinion exists on my profile for the rest of time, unless I delete the comment or my profile.

Yes that's a fair point about trying to rejoin with a slim majority in favour. The majority could flip after some time, potentially.

Realistically I don't think the UK is going to rejoin the EU for the next few years, but I think it could well become a more popular political idea over time, as the effects of Brexit become more apparent. People might start to feel it in their pockets more. So maybe the UK will end up rejoining in the next 20, 30, 40 years. Who knows though.
