I don't fully understand how/why you guys selfhost some apps
  • What's the purpose here, will you host it and access it from a browser? Or do you only want to backup its data to your server?

I have been online for a long time and seen countless services come and go, often my data goes with them.

So that was my reason for a long time, having my data available and not relying on some third party.

Now, with the emergence of Big Data + AI I've also become a lot more privacy aware. Before I couldn't even imagine why anyone would want to target my data (data mining takes a lot of work to be useful), but now/soon they can just point AI at data dumps and ask it something like "give me a list of X people to exploit, order it by method, chance of success etc etc"

Paranoia? Yes, but suddenly it feels reasonable to be paranoid.

Plex crossed a line with "Your week in review" emails today.
  • I've been a Flex Pass lifetime user since 2018 and I honestly feel like I got my money's worth during that time so I can't complain too much, but I'm absolutely ready to switch. They only focus on money-grab features these days, and playback & subtitle issues are getting worse every update.

I never bothered _too_ much about the privacy stuff, but after they got so "me me me" focused I trust them less with my data.

I'm just waiting for the Jellyfin Tizen-version to be approved (Samsung OS "app store") and once that's done I'm immediately switching.

I have Jellyfin on Chromecast, but unfortunately my TV doesn't supports Dolby Atmos passthrough, so only native apps support it (+ Chromecast is just a bit sluggish)

  • Plex haven't taken user feedback into consideration for years. They seem to be making universally hated features exclusively.

Your realistic options are to accept Plex as it is, or switch to something else.

    Plex users, why?
  • Plex has gotten worse and worse over the years. The second Jellyfin supports Tizen I will probably switch (Samsung TV OS)

Taking a break from this subreddit...
  • I might come back at a later stage but I can't deal with this level of intellect that I have encountered tonight.

No you're right, we're all very dumb and you should probably stay away.

    Help what happened
  • If there's one thing I've learned over the years about self-hosting it's that I'll happily pay to not have to deal with email hosting.

The only "self-hosting" I do for email is to download my own local archive for storage.
