Canadian Author Megathread?

Who are some of your favourite Canadian authors? Remember to share the author's website if available, instead of an Amazon link. Your local library may have a lot of Canadian books too!

I saw a Silverwing book by Kenneth Oppel at a clearance sale and that took me on a nostalgia train. Looked him up and I didn't realize he's quite a prolific Canadian author!

Not sure if its all YA/easy reading, but that's what I grew up with. Both the Silverwing series and Airborn are top notch for that sorta thing and still hold up well for a re-read occassionally.

  • Makita is good bang for your buck and Japanese owned. You can even get some cool made in Japan drills online that work with our batteries.

KMS tools is a great local store to buy tools from any brand, often have good sales.

  • Holy cow I just recommended them to someone the other day, I need to cancel that real quick.

Edit: Danielle Smith is a wretched traitor to Canada bought and paid for. Already hated her, but her little Mar-a-lago bribe vacation should be grounds for treason.

  • Consider putting a wanted ad out locally on kijiji (instead of marketplace for the love of god people, we have had a better canadian alternative this whole time that isnt owned by US big tech). I've had good luck with that for old tech since chances are someone has something that'll work sitting in a bin collecting dust otherwise.

  • Wow that's incredible. My 3-way fridge died this winter so I was considering a DC fridge from cabindepot. Had no idea Danby and Unique were Canadian, and Unique has a whole line of DC fridges and freezers!

Still quite expensive compared to getting a small Danby AC deep freezer and turning the thermostat down to use it as an ultra-efficient top load fridge. But would mean less load on the inverter and could fit it in the original fridge location 🤷‍♂️

  • Wow they sound like a nice family run Canadian business! I may end up buying from them I think. They even plant 5 trees and 5 kelp in Canadian forests per uke!

10% off and free shipping right now too

  • Definitely, the quality difference is unbelievable!

I find most of the people I know that complain cafés are too expensive drink drip anyways and it seems to be about the same price everywhere 🤷‍♂️. Its $2.16 for a large drip at Tim's here, and $2-$3 at most every local café I've ever been to apart from really bougie ones.

People just see the $4-6+ milk drinks and blended frozen drinks (with real ingredients, apples-oranges) and get sticker shock compared to Tim's fake whipped topping and sweetener sludge (sorry, "iced capp") for $4.19 when they could be enjoying much better drip in the meantime for effectively the same price.

    Non-USA Ukulele Brands

I suppose I should have expected most of the major brands to be USA based since Hawaii was colonized afterall.

Here's a list of Non-USA owned brands that I found in a preliminary search.

    • Ibanez
      • Country of Manufacture: I spy Made in China on all 3 uke models
      • Country of Ownership: Japan
    • Aria
      • Country of Manufacture: China and Indonesia, Japan for platinum line (no ukes)
  • Mary Brown's has good chicken. Big Mary Monday deal used to be good, don't have any around here now.

A&W is awesome. Canadian ones are locally owned by franchisees and it shows in the quality. Antibiotic free run Canadian chicken last I checked. Free run Canadian eggs. Good quality Canadian beef. Canadian vege for the most part I think... All for the same price as the slop served at other fast food joints these days. The coffee isn't my favourite but I know lots of people that like going there for breakfast and don't seem to mind. Usually has a decent sit down atmosphere for breakfast. Lots of them host car meets still in the summer.

I WISH Robin's Donuts was still around. Unfortunately Timmies all but put them out of business before enshittifying. I randomly found one up around Lake Superior a couple years ago in some small town if I remember right. They must have bought out the location and kept it going. They were still baking fresh donuts in house, had the same mugs, same coffee. It was like stepping into a time capsule and made me loathe what capitalism has done to Timmies.

For coffee you are usually best finding whatever local non-chain café you like best and stick with that. If I'm visiting somewhere I'm not familiar with I just search for a non-chain café and get to try some new coffee.

If you really like the chain coffee shop vibe I believe Blenz and Second Cup are both decent Canadian founded and owned still, maybe someone else can confirm, I can't find the details rn

    Edit: to add emphasis

Tim Hortons Hasn't Been Canadian-Owned For A Long Time

    Just a little reminder.

Pisses me off to no end that they use the Canadian identity for marketing when they sold out decades ago.

Also their coffee and food has been shit for a long time too, coincidence? I think not.

Egli Farm - Wool and Sheepskin Products

I just wanted to shout out Egli Farm. I found them while doing my Christmas shopping this year and everything my partner and I have gotten has been great quality at fair prices. The sheepskin bucket hat was a big hit at Christmas since it enables year round bucket-hattery in Canada lol

They have hundreds of Made in Canada wool and sheepskin products including clothing, footwear, homegoods, raw wool and sheepskin supplies, etc. Seems like they contract some of the more processing-intense type products out to Stanfields but they're in Canada too 🤙

    Family-owned in Ontario since 1952!

P.S. if you end up ordering something leave a note on the order suggesting they switch to a .ca TLD so its easier for people tell they're Canadian
