Retirement in the USA is a scam
  • You got in at a bad time and probably picked some subpar investments. You likely bought some big tech stocks at the worst possible time, and many of them never recovered because they were way over valued to begin with.

Stick with total market or sp500 fund like VTI or VOO. You’d be up right now if you had.

Also, it sounds like you invested once and then never bought more? The whole point is that you’re buying more every paycheck. You’d be way up if you’d kept investing through 2022 when prices were low.

Retirement accounts with the right funds are supposed to be set it and forget it. Make the automatic contribution every paycheck and look at it maybe once or twice a year. Otherwise, let it be.

  • The incentives aren’t there for Apple. It makes money selling you a product that you trust. If that were violated, it’s a threat to their business. It’s Google, Meta, and Microsoft that make their money collecting your data to target you with ads.

Bernie Sanders: Vote Harris because Gaza is ‘not the only issue’
  • Your actions will produce more harm than good if Trump gets elected. What a privileged life you must live to be able to make a stand on principle — even though that will produce a worse outcome for the people you supposedly care about. The additional blood that will be shed is very much on your hands.

You don’t get to just walk away from the situation absolved of guilt because of your so called principles.

Bernie Sanders: Vote Harris because Gaza is ‘not the only issue’
  • Most of Lemmy thinks you should vote against Kamala on principle against genocide and if Trump gets elected and makes the genocide far worse than it would’ve been under Kamala that that is a preferred outcome and somehow they won’t have blood on their hands.

Dropbox lays off 20% of staff, says it overinvested and underperformed
  • I always wondered this too. It was a good idea 15 years ago. But, they don’t offer enough to justify the price. Literally everyone offers cloud storage now and a million other features too.

    Software prices.
  • Everyone likes to pile on, but do the costs go down? Cloud isn’t run in a vacuum. You’ve got a data center full of employees keeping the place running. The data center has electricity and cooling costs. The company runs an HR department. The electric company raises prices. The hardware the “cloud” lives on wears out and needs to be replaced. All of these costs involve humans and humans demand annual raises to keep up with inflation. Also, investors that gave you the money to build the cloud and keep it running demand a return on their investment. They don’t just give out their money for free. So, I can’t help but feel this is not an accurate view of the world.

  • Probably this… if you’re not going to benefit from the new water heater, you’d probably be tempted to pass it off to the next owner. Renting is a way to do that.

  • How is input lag for the MacBook? Friend of mine said it was bad enough that he couldn’t seriously use it that way. Not sure if others feel that way too. That would be my biggest use case for it…. Use it for work and having a massive screen.

Starbucks shares slide after coffee chain says sales fell again, suspends outlook
  • The biggest thing I appreciate about Starbucks is the app. I can order, go in, and grab my cup and go. This is enormously important in the morning when I NEED to get to work. With the “local” shops you need to wait an arbitrary amount of time depending on how long the line is and what those people might order. Also, I don’t have to deal with the FUCKING iPad swivel. Sorry “local” coffee shops, but until you stop condoning begging from your customers I will generally avoid, even if your coffee is better.

Don’t agree? That’s fine. I do what works for me. You do what works for you.

Are you guys and dolls still using Reddit?
  • I want Lemmy to be a viable alternative and do use it. But, the lack of niche communities makes it harder. I do go back to Reddit from time to time for that fix and to keep up with a few things.

It's my first time building a computer. I also haven't really done much PC gaming in the past 15 years, except on my Steam Deck. Actually, it is the Steam Deck that has convinced me to invest in a desktop PC with some more power. I like the Linux experience on Steam Deck and would like to stick with that if possible. I haven't used Windows in 15 years either, as I tend to use Mac OS and a bit of Linux for personal and work. Windows seems to just get worse and worse and I'd like to avoid it if possible.

In any case, I went with an AMD CPU because I've heard about Intel's recent corrosion issues. And, chose an NVidia GPU since I'd like to take advantage of ray tracing. I've heard the driver support can be a bit mixed on Linux, but I'm open to trying to make it work unless folks think it really is terrible. Any feedback is helpful.

I’m always surprised by the quality of comments on Lemmy and the analysis provided, often by experts in their field. It gives a sense that the average Lemmy user is a lot smarter than the average member of the public.

Also, when it comes to politics, I think the average Lemmy user is pretty perceptive of what real power dynamics are at play and what interests society should be looking to promote.

It's been a pleasure to be on this platform with you all. Where do you all come from? And why is it so hard to find people like you in the real world?

There can be a lot of junk on Temu admittedly, but it’s kind of fun to find a few deals.

Found a pair of Leatherman Raptor shears ($99 USD) for $12

Also found a Benchmade Follow Up Fixed Blade ($120 USD) for $16

Bought a drone for $15. It’s not high quality, but it’s a drone, for $15. Fun to mess around and learn with.

Anyone else find some deals? Or, got another suggestion besides Temu?

I see lots of communities with hundreds of subscribers, but no posts. What is with that? If you’re going to register a community, at least help it get going. Post some content regularly, until it becomes self-sustaining. It’s disappointing to open a community with hundreds of subscribers and not a single post.

I already get rate-limited like crazy on lemmy and there are only like 60,000 users on my instance. Is each instance really just one server or are there multiple containers running across several hosts? I’m concerned that federation will mean an inconsistent user experience. Some instances many be beefy, others will be under resourced… so the average person might think Lemmy overall is slow or error-prone.

Reddit has millions of users. How the hell is this going to scale? Does anyone have any information about Lemmy’s DB and architecture?

I found this post about Reddit’s DB from 2012. Not sure if Lemmy has a similar approach to ensure speed and reliability as the user base and traffic grows.
