I got SWAT'ed and handcuffed live while Linux development streaming!
  • Keffals has a bit of a bad stink around her online presence. I think she claimed to be posting sex hormones to underage people at one point, without any kind of medical license. One of the ecelebs on the weirder side of the terminally online subculture.

Obviously no one should ever be swatted. Wanted to mention that she is somewhat controversial though as opposed to a regular activist.

  • I mean, there were riots last month and then the last time I recall riots before then was 2019 when the journalist was shot. There might be more inbetween I've forgotten but a cadence of 5 years is more than the ~10 year cadence for mainland UK (which is culturally very similar). Sectarian tensions have died down in the past 20 years - my sister is currently in Belfast and loving it - but they still exist and have deep roots.

Sir Keir rules out extra cash to repair NHS
  • They can't keep going with the current setup due to how changing demographics are producing increased demands on the NHS. People using the service are much older, with more complicated diseases, then ever envisioned when we designed the systems.

Beaurocracy is causing inefficiencies due to too much red tape. We spent £5.1 billion on "costs of harm" in the year 2023/24 which is quite a large amount of the £160 billion total budget. Running total of outstanding compensation claims was recently £83 billion. We need a way to fix the processes to prevent these clinical failures or find some way to cap the amount of compensation claimed.

Additionally the use of short term contractors is hemmoraging money. Often the management will give IT contracts to large firms like accenture who fail to deliver semi-regularly while charging a premium. NHS administrators frequently use the big names because they are recognisable instead of interrogating which company is actually best placed to deliver.

I'd personally be happy with looking more closely about how other European countries handle healthcare. They seem to spend less for better outcomes, while ensuring that everyone who needs medical treatment receives it. If it can save lives we shouldn't be too ideological.

Edit: In Scotland health is devolved, we get higher levels of funding per capita due to the Barnett Formula, and lastly income tax is higher to provide more money to the NHS. Outcomes are actually worse here than in England due to mismanagement. Seems like an example of more funding not being a silver bullet.

What movie have you rewatched the most?
  • There's a dumb Italian Horror movie called Del Amore d'ella Muerte (Cemetary Man in English speaking territories) that I absolutely love. It was made in the 90s and stars Rupert Everrit as a graveyard keeper who fights a zombie invasion with his mute assistant.

Hard to explain but the universe they create is very comfy where he's drinking red wine and shooting zombies.

Grasshopper CEO Suda51 says people ‘care too much’ about Metacritic scores
  • Yeah there are some absolute gems like Astral Chain which got positive reviews like 8/10 but in reality are close to 10/10 for me personally. One of the best games on the system.

Then there are a few infamous examples like Godhand and Deadly Premonition which were completely slated by many reviewers but I found to be very strong titles. 8/10 personally.

  • I was trying to write a custom Strategy for an objectMapper in Java. Foolishly decided to ask ChatGPT about it and got instructions which suggested an implementation that was the inverse of how Strategies actually work. Stuck for an afternoon.

Then in the evening I read the docs and put it together in half an hour from scratch. Lesson learned about the stochastic parrots.

  • Honestly sonically this one sounds very modern. Q-Tip production on this sounds like what Hitboy has been doing for the recent Nas albums. The older albums will sound dated.

Mr. Smith (1995) probably has the most recognisable hits on it in terms of diving into one of the earlier albums.

Sausage rolls and Oasis: ‘Britishcore’ TikTok trend drives interest in UK culture
  • The UK has always had an outsized influence on popular culture worldwide. For example our musicians are overrepresented in terms of music charts in many other countries. There was a good Economist article about this a few years ago where they interviewed a die-hard Gorillaz fan who lived in rural Russia.

However, that 90s 'cool Britania' self confidence we had is definitely missing these days. We've retained a sense of British twee or fascination with the mundane though which I suspect is driving this modern interest. I don't think it's a coincidence that youtube/instagram shorts are preoccupied with the mundane - and we have heaps of that to offer up.

www.theguardian.com Former England players accuse RFU of ‘suppressing data’ in brain injuries case

‘Crucial’ medical documents have not been disclosed, according to a complaint signed by former players including Steve Thompson and Mark Regan

This could have major repercussions for the game as we know it. The RFU has already reduced the amount of contact allowed in the grassroots of the game. Will the product we all love survive a legal tsunami if this ends in a court ruling?

I always wonder if you could get players to sign away their rights to sue but I'm pretty certain that would not be legally enforceable, alongside being totally exploitative.

Wes Streeting has reportedly indicated that the Labour government will make the Tories' emergency puberty blocker ban permament.

Apologies for the slightly skewed picture. I actually own this artwork. A close family friend has been collecting 19th Century Japanese woodcuts his entire life, and he gifted this one of a wedding scene to my wife and I when we got married.

More details about the work. The artist Kunisada lived from 1786 to 1864 and he shared a studio / teacher with the (perhaps more famous) artist Kuniyoshi. This work was published by Hayashiya Shogoro in 1850.

The work depicts a Kabuki theatre scene; traditional Japanese theatre. Actors are playing the roles of Aburu-ya Oshin and Fukuoka Mitsugi in the play Ise Ondo. In this scene the couple are getting married.

www.thetimes.com Loaded magazine returns to reassure men they can ‘ogle beautiful women’

Men need to be men, according to the editor of the revived magazine hoping to reclaim its rebellious place in pop culture

Heard the editor being interviewed on Radio4 Today Programme this morning. This 90s throwback is bizarre. Do people really think there will be demand from this after the initial novelty?

I read a couple articles this morning and the "journalism" reads like a Sunday Sport article.

Interesting thought experiment - since the magazine is online only - are the nonces going to have to print out the magazine now to leave it in shubbery for kids to find? Those reddit threads where every man over the age of 40 seems to have a story about finding porn mags in bushes always had a creepy undertone. I'm not sure that the 'porn fairy' commenters sometimes refer to was a very savoury character.

Playing Hellblade 2 at the moment myself. Personally I'm fortunate not to need any of the accessibility features but I found this review to be a fascinating read.

The reviewer also compares the accessibility options to some other recent AAA releases in this reddit comment.

In terms of my opinion of the game: I've only got the Series S version so it's not the full fat graphics but even then they are stunning. I think some of the negative reviews were from people wanting it to be a different type of game, however, if you are aware it is basically a walking simulator with Punchout combat every so often then the story and world takes centre stage. The world is similar to God of War (2018) but grittier and focusing on other aspects of Scandi mythology. I think I like this world more.

    Edinburgh International Festival ticket prices

EIF tickets are so much more expensive this year. They used to be cheaper seeing the opera during the festival than during the rest of the year due to subsidies from the arts councils. This year it is more than double the price! A ticket for Carmen in the upper circle with a restricted view was more than £100.

Granted, I did have a concession for being under 25 at the time, but I saw La Boheme at the festival a few years ago for £15. In some good news they've raised the concession age threshold to 30 this year but not sure how large a discount it applies.

FWIW I still think that the quality of the EIF is worth the price. Comedy shows in the Fringe can be like ~£25 these days and the quality is extremely variable. Will probably only go and see my mate's show at The Stand this year

Free Fringe can have hidden gems but I've ended up being trapped in some extremely awkward shows with 3 other audience members before. Might be a while before I spin that paeticular roulette wheel again lol.

www.thetimes.co.uk School reported parents of ‘trans’ child to social services

George Watson’s College in Edinburgh alerted social workers in 2020 after the parents asked the school to adopt a ‘watchful waiting’ approach to their child

Interesting story since it's my old school. From what I've heard the headmaster can't be arsed dealing with these difficult parents anymore and is retiring.

My wife was a teacher and she believes the school made the right call since it sounds like the family were not coping with their child's needs and needed extra support.

Rumour from the school is that the child had socially transitioned but the parents were not aware of this until their other child informed them. Mother is currently campaigning on twitter and name dropping all of the teachers involved in an unpleasant manner.

One interesting angle is that this is a private school so the parents probably feel that they ought to be able to dictate exactly how the school ought to handle the situation. At the end of the day they are still a school though with a duty of care to the students. They need to follow government regulations assiduously and at the time the guidelines were clear.

I've really enjoyed this radio4 series about internet culture and the impact that messaging apps have had on our lives/politics.

Each episode is a half hour with different themes: WhatsApp groups, Politicians using WhatsApp, Slack, Chatbots/AI, Discord leakers, Telegram in Russia.

Probably would say the first half is more UK-specific but the show does a good job of making the later episodes relevant, thought provoking.
