Let's take a industry-standard account security feature and... paywall it?
  • 2008-2014, I think it had value as a public square where journalists of all stripes really engaged. Now it's a cesspool. Anyone still hanging out at the nazi bar should really stop and think about the ramifications.

How have you personally found the Lemmy community compared to its competition and other social media?
  • AAA devs should only release games they have invested hundreds of millions of dollars into making once they are absolutely finished and bug free with no expensive future DLCs or microtransactions, absolutely no ongoing subscription costs for the absolute minimum price they think they can sell it for and not go out of business but it should also be DRM free and nobody should buy it anyway because its digital and you shouldnt feel bad downloading it for free because it doesnt cost money to make another digital copy its just corporate greed.”

Honestly I think it's a lot more complicated and nuanced regarding this here than reddit. When I was a wee lad, I yo-ho-ho some sweet software and games via bbs's but mostly went legit as I aged. I don't think there's more piracy justification here than reddit, but also, I think we're in a 'golden-shower-age' of enshitiffication where services paid for won't be rendered and that, justifiably, moves the sentiment.

That said, as a game dev, I don't think people are asking for your proposed argument overwhelmingly - they just want AAA devs to treat their paying userbase better. Some of those considerations are unrealistic, but often they're justified.

I'm finding Lemmy's audience to be very similar to 2008 reddit, it's not perfect, but it's better than current day reddit and I thank the lemmy creators for having a viable alternative.

    FUCK SPEZ.

US frets over Iran's accelerated uranium enrichment programme
  • I'm more worried about North Korea's program. Iran is, strangely, the paragon of reason and predictability - compared to North Korea.

  • This other thread on chicken inflation kinda bucks this trend but who's really right?

or maybe they're growing humongous chickens with teeny tiny bones?

    The dream
  • But also I’m blown away that most grocery stores don’t list inventory and prices on the website. I can only think this is because they don’t want to show prices in an attempt to get you to go to the store.

    yuuup.

‘Zombie deer disease’ epidemic spreads in Yellowstone as scientists raise fears it may jump to humans
  • everywhere they natively lived

sorry ma'am, your child was one of thirty five killed when we reintroduced wolves to kindercare because they were native here in the 1300s, but their comeback is something to behold, and the survivors have quite a story!

I kid, but also, reintroduce them to areas where they're least likely to bump up against population, all the areas they natively lived in the past are, unfortunately, overrun by humans. I live in Washington state, where we're seeing grey wolves slowly come back. I'm all for it. And here in Seattle, we've always had Coyotes living around the town, on the large greenways. Keep your cats inside if you love them!

Many prehistoric handprints show a finger missing. What if this was not accidental?
  • Archers do this intentionally for skill bonus

can you explain or link to some kind of attribution for this assessment? I don't know enough about archery to understand how it would help.

Why should you never tell a pig a secret?
  • FOR REAL FOLKS: here's a famous civil rights lawyer explaining it, then he gets a cop to explain it too. The answer remains unchanged: it's a whole fuckton easier to incriminate yourself or give cops the details they need to hang a charge on you even if they know you're the wrong person, it never benefits you to talk to the police without an attorney.

More couples are choosing a ‘dual income, no kids’ lifestyle
  • Makes a fascinating short story:

Jimmy thought his job at the data center was easy, clock in, watch the cameras, do the rounds, clock out. Good pay, low effort....

then 10,000 people showed up with hammers and crow bars. Jimmy was about to have a very bad day.
