Valve attempts to deal with jokes, memes and ASCII art reviews on Steam
  • At least 90% of the memes and jokes are unrelated to the game, just no brain copy paste. That’s really annoying.

I like game-related memes, but they’re really hard to find now

Costco raising membership fee for the first time in years - but hot dog price remains
  • Old price, you need to spend 3000 annually to meet the break even of executive membership.

After increase, the break even is 3250. Considering the inflation, I think it still worth to keep the executive membership if you visit Costco regularly.

Not sure if Sams will follow this. Maybe Sams would take this chance to attract more members?

Costco stopped selling Cascade Platinum (in Canada)
  • till sold in bulk but often packaged more for breaking up and selling individually.

    Brilliant!

I just found that while costco.ca removed this SKU, costco business centre added a new SKU, which is exact what I need https://www.costcobusinesscentre.ca/cascade-platinum-dishwasher-detergent%2C-93-tabs.product.2001142484.html

I guess that costco is trying to promote the more profitable, more expensive new product from Cascade.

Personally, I don't think it worth my extra trip to biz centre for the detergent. Next time if I really need something which disappeared from warehouse, I'll visit a business centre and check if they just moved it.

    Thank you once again

Costco stopped selling Cascade Platinum (in Canada)
  • Thank you for sharing it. I tried the Kirkland brand, but it had some scene remained on my dinnerware. It was very likely that I came to this conclusion due to placebo effect. It may also related to my family's cooking style or the hardness of my water.

  • Cascade Platinum is my favourite dishwasher detergent. I've been using it for years (https://cascadeclean.com/en-us/products/cascade-platinum-actionpacs-dishwasher-detergent-fresh-scent/)

In the last week, my local costco warehouse and costco.ca stopped providing Cascade Platinum. Instead, they're still selling Cascade Power Clean in green box (https://www.costco.ca/cascade-power-clean-dishwasher-detergent-actionpacs%2c-115-count.product.100483144.html) and they added a new product to the shelf Cascade Platinum Plus (https://www.costco.ca/cascade-platinum-plus-actionpacs%2c-81-count.product.4000230558.html)

I've tried the power green one, and I'm not satisfy with its quality: the smell of the food may remain in my dishwasher. The Platinum Plus is much more expensive than Platinum.

Does Costco changed the product line at your warehouse?

Thunderbird or Betterbird. What is better on Windows?
  • Well, this is my first time hearing Betterbird

After reading their feature table https://www.betterbird.eu/#featuretable I think they have a really laudable goal.

I'd suggest to check the feature table first. If there is anything you concern, you pick Betterbird. Otherwise, you can choose one randomly :)

As a normal, boring user that does nothing special other than browse the internet and the occasional "casual coding" -- what am I supposed to do with 32GiB of ram?
  • "just browse the internet" doesn't indicate that you don't need a powerful computer in 2023. Modern browsers are really heavy - and rendering websites are much more complex now.

Unless you're really frugal about your PC budget, I think it's definitely "to-go" for 32G

You’re going to need an SSD in order to play Final Fantasy 16 on PC
  • I’m a bit baffled that some people still use HDDs considering how cheap SSDs have gotten. You can get a 2TB M.2 for around $100. If you’ve got the specs for new games, there’s no excuse.

I don't know why you got some downvotes. Buying an SSD to store the latest games is much more cheaper than buying a GPU. If one already has a powerful GPU, I don't know why they consider an SSD "not affordable"

  • I had been using WSL2 for about one year. The experience was terrible compared to a Linux host. (Sadly I can't change the system on my work laptop). However, it was much better than Cygwin, msys2 and powershell - based on my experience.

If your host OS is windows and you're interested in Linux, I think WSL2 is a good way to have a try

Comparison between NixOS vs blendOS vs Vanilla OS: what to pick and why?
  • Also: I think rpm-ostree only supports rpm-based packages, tho; right?

Can I install .deb software too?

I don't think rpm-ostree could support .deb softwares, just like dnf/yum can't support deb packages.

Can you share your use case for trying to install a deb package in Fedora? I'm just curious.

And is there any kind of system-as-a-config-file kind of solution available like in NixOS or blendOS?

Good question. I only have a few computers, so I had never considered about it.

Comparison between NixOS vs blendOS vs Vanilla OS: what to pick and why?
  • While I’ve looked into Fedora Silverblue, that distro is limited to only install Flatpaks, which is fine for “apps”, but seems to be more of a problem with managing system- and CLI tools.

No. Your understanding to Fedora Silverblue is wrong. I can just run rpm-ostree install package.name in Silverblue, like other Fedora spins. The small disadvantage is that I need to reboot to apply this update. (re-construct)

but doesn’t that result in new A/B snapshots, or something like that?

Well, you can call it snapshots, but there is no need to think about it. In most cases, the system points to the newest snapshot (deployment 0). If a rollback is needed, I can pin to the older deployments. When a major change is to be applied (Like bump Fedora version), I'd manually mark the current deployment as dont-auto-delete.

Sure, but I’d like to have a more seamless experience, i.e. not having to open/start any “containers” or something like that.

I never used toolbox in my Fedora Silverblue system. I feel that I can't tell the difference between using Silverblue and the default Fedora spin

A dumb question here: Due to job duty change, I need to be back to office a few months later. My office is not close to subway station, so I'm thinking of riding a bicycle. I have never done that before in Toronto, and I have several doubts

    1. Is riding the bicycle along Yonge St. (Davisville Ave to Dundas) safe? Is there a separated bike lane?
    2. Can I still ride in winter? How uncomfortable it would be for riding 5 km?
    3. Furthermore, in winter, will the bike lane be used for dumping snow? (it happens in some cities)
    4. Is there an online guide or book for newbies like me?

Thank you for your tolerance to my questions

I was very interested in the differences between Business Centre and Warehouses, and I had a chance to visit a nearby Business Centre a few weeks ago. I'd like to share some of my impressions about it.

    1. Bigger than warehouse, more SKUs. There is no Coca Cola Zero in all the Costco Warehouses I've visited, but I could find them in Business Centre. There are also more electronics to choose, like fan at various size.

    2. Choosing meat is so cool (literally) The meat is put on open shelves in a room with low temperature (like diary room). After making my selection, I had to rush out of it

    3. No gas station, No food court But their is still rotisserie chicken at 7.99! Sadly that my family doesn't like that.

    4. The location is okay for me. Luckily, this Business Centre is not that far away from my home. Depending on the traffic, it cost me about 40 minute for one-way driving.

TLDR There is not significant difference between Business Centre and Warehouse, as I had expected before
