My feed has been flooded with posts about the Sync app released for Android, with a lot of hype but also some complaints regarding pricing, ads, privacy, etc.
This made me really appreciate Memmy, with which I have had no issues so far, and am impressed with how clean and easy it has been to use despite being new.
I can’t get on with voyager. What the dev has done with a React PWA app is amazing but not having haptics makes it feel too weird. And the new app version is just a web view and performance is awful for me, not sure if it’s better on newer phones. But i could learn a lot from what he’s done with React I’m sure.
I'm also an ex-Apollo user. Memmy was my go to until I learned about Voyager. Don't even need Sync much, at this point, as this web app works for everything. If Voyager improves posting experience with rich text preview, it's simply perfect.
Same for me with Voyager. I do appreciate famous Reddit apps switching over to Lemmy, but given what Voyager and others achieved so far while remaining open-source and funded by donations, I personally don't see the appeal anymore in a closed-source Lemmy app that's going to display ads and ask you to pay to hide them.
All that’s missing for me is a swipe to hide function like Apollo had and Voyager has. Once I have that I’ll be pretty locked in on Memmy, as I prefer it aesthetically !
In my opinion, it’s one of the minimalist and snappy Lemmy app in comparison to Memmy (which is little bit cluttered with all the features and little more battery drainer with the similar usage pattern ).
If anyone likes the Voyager then I’m sure you like Avelon too.. give it a try once..
Avelon dev here - thanks! Really enjoy Memmy as well, pretty impressive what you guys are able to do with React Native.
It's very cool to see so much enthusiasm in the dev community. Lemmy can definitely be a place where lots of different apps & frontends can thrive to suit just about everyone.
I think that Memmy has the right priorities and a strong lead in regards to what’s important right now. When I read the changelog it feels like this project is on a really solid foundation.
I also like that’s it’s tuned very much for efficiency. No unnecessary glitter and stuff.
Are you sure it’s the app and not websites you visit through Lemmy or your instance tracking you? I’m not seeing any tracking on my end when just browsing.
Appcenter does OTA push updates, dev is probably making a fast update system so they don't have to push updates to the various stores, the app was made in react native so appcenter is pretty standard for codepush OTA updates
I'm using Sync right now and honestly it's not much better than thunder or Connect which are free. The UI is slicker, but I feel my phone heating as it runs, and it's obnoxious seeing the gray boxes from the ads I'm blocking. Really hope boost doesn't pull this shit, or at least allows people to play for premium instead of fucking subscribing to it. $16 a YEAR for an app that just mobilizes a free online service is insanity.
I never used sync previously, but this has made a pretty bad first impression so far.
I used Sync pro for years and I don't ever want to change. Also I like supporting devs of apps which I use constantly. I don't know why everyone is talking shit about Sync as 16 dollars a year is literally nothing. Good on him for having that option to support the dev :)
$16 a year is not nothing, it's a subscription service for a basic mobile app with quality options in a competing space. A one time purchase that means I own the app outright or a lifetime "subscription" option is a much better option, and on par with literally every competing app in the space. Mentalities like this are why shit like NBA 2K, Call of Duty, and Diablo have become lootbox fests.
I've never used anything sync before a few hours ago (prior was in bacon reader for 8 years but it doesn't look like they're interested in making another app), I've been using it for 2 of the last 3 hours, no obvious phone heat at all on my s22+ that likes to heat randomly. So maybe sync fixed my phone heating issues? XD to each our own, but I'm pretty sold so far on sync, and their "ads" aren't showing up as anything except blank spaces (this will undoubtedly be fixed). I think I got bacon reader for a steal at 2$ (and whatever personal information they were harvesting) and I think sync for 1 time payment of 20$will yield similar happiness.
Yeah I used boost, paid for premium and used it for years. Will be more than happy to do so again once it's out but I'm not into this subscribing to an app bullshit. Let me pay for it outright. I am not down to rent apps any more than I am okay with renting the phone it runs on.
