Here's my uBlock origin custom rules for blocking youtube shorts:
! Block Youtube Shorts on front page
youtube.com##ytd-rich-section-renderer > .ytd-rich-section-renderer > .ytd-rich-section-renderer[is-shorts=""]
youtube.com##yt-formatted-string:has-text(/#shorts/):upward(ytd-rich-item-renderer.ytd-rich-grid-row)
! Block Youtube Shorts on the subscriptions page
youtube.com##ytd-thumbnail-overlay-time-status-renderer[overlay-style=SHORTS]:upward(ytd-grid-video-renderer.ytd-grid-renderer)
! Remove Shorts on sidebar menu
youtube.com##a.yt-simple-endpoint.ytd-guide-entry-renderer[title=Shorts]:upward(ytd-guide-entry-renderer.ytd-guide-section-renderer)
! Block Youtube Shorts on the search results page
youtube.com##ytd-thumbnail-overlay-time-status-renderer[overlay-style=SHORTS]:upward(ytd-video-renderer.ytd-item-section-renderer)
youtube.com##span.ytd-reel-shelf-renderer:has-text(/Shorts/):upward(ytd-reel-shelf-renderer.ytd-item-section-renderer)
I am much happier having this real estate back. Fuck yt shorts!
I have a redirector rule that redirects youtube.com/shorts/whatever with youtube.com/watch?v=whatever, so it uses the good player when I open a short.
details here
Example URL: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/abcdefghijk
Include pattern: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/*
Redirect to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=$1
Pattern type: Wildcard

Inside the stopped car there was a terrorist holding a child hostage and threatened to explode the car if demands weren’t met. Police dog took a shot and miserably failed, resulting in 30 casualties
Nobody watches videos anymore. Back in the days, video recorders were invented so we don't have to watch TV anymore, now there is a watch later list on YouTube.
do i spy a Dirk Gently reference? i say it's a bit of a stretch, but that you should choose a video recorder for the metaphor... well, nothing is ever a coincidence.
Other days I want to enjoy 20 hours of an AI voice recapping a Korean manhwa about the world's most powerful necromancer from another world that's like a video game...
YouTube shorts also have their place for micro hits of dopamine.
So long as it makes us happy, it can't be that bad?
I do watch some scientific/historical YouTube channels, but I try to keep them limited and vetted. I don't mind (and actually enjoy) listing to someone passionately monologue regarding their hobby/favourite piece of media. That's a low stakes topic where even if they're giving me wrong info it's not terribly harmful.
Not to say that 'professional'(syndicated/broadcasted) documentaries are all truth, considering the History channel. I just like my background noise to not lead me down an awful rabbit hole.
Even National Geographic is going down the pseudoscience rabbit hole.
I try to Listen to True Crime stuff on youtube, but it's really hard now that the name of basically every felony has to be censored out of the video to avoid demonetization
That is pretty much the state of it. Until some insane crazy person kills someone, and youtube considers a specific character to be a dog whistle showing support to the crazy person.
Yes this actually happened to Danny Phantom fans.
I imagine when Nickelodeon smash comes out, all of the videos showing off the Ember character are going to get flagged. I already had an Ember related video that got flagged for criminal Behavior and they turned down my appeal. Thankfully YouTube is not my job.
Maybe I'm a sucker for choosing to be a janitor instead of a YouTuber, but I at least have labor laws protecting my 13 an hour...
Better than "Fuck you because we're Youtube" with a side of "We are falsley accussing you of being a groomer because you're famous and we want attention"
