I had one inserted 10 odd years ago, and the ladies(!) who did it had zero sympathy and wouldn't even give me Tylenol. I had to take it out 2 days later. Never again.

Studies have found that health care professionals sometimes underestimate how much pain a female patient experiences and don’t perceive female pain to be urgent, said Amanda Williams, a pain researcher and professor of clinical health psychology at University College London.
  In a 2016 study co-authored by Dr. Williams, 63 pain doctors and medical students were shown images of people in pain and were asked what the appropriate treatment for that pain would be. Participants suggested “more medical referrals for the male images and more psychologist or psychiatrist referrals for females,” Dr. Williams said. The findings underscore a notion that “women can’t distinguish pain from emotion, whereas men can suppress their emotions and give you a pure account of their pain,” she added.

The fact that they just don't believe women about anything is absolute bull shit.
Same, had one inserted over a decade ago. No one said anything about pain medication. Drove myself home and felt every imperfection in the road. About a week of severe cramping.
Went for the follow up and the gyno adjusted its position without warning. When I cried out, she told me the pain would subside in a few days. It didn't, so I got it removed a month later.
Glad to see the tides are changing 🙌
I had two placed in the US- miserable.
Then I got one in Canada, where, get this- THEY COME IN DIFFERENT SIZES. And they gave me Percocet and Valium beforehand and had me come in to take them the appropriate amount of time before the procedure so the medication would be at peak strength as it was happening. AND I got a juice box after.
I've heard enough horror stories about coils, and I've had enough instances of medical stuff not believing me over my level of pain to understand how this creates a perfect storm of sexist BS where people are suffering unecessarily.
It's amazing to me that women who work in medicine still perpetuate this unsympathetic attitude.
There's a reason I got on the depo shot over an iud. They scare me so much
