Just left Reddit and joined Lemmy, what are some cool and active communities to join
It feels like I’m decluttering. I joined a couple meme communities or whatever they’re called here. And I like the usual stuff movies, games, books and have checked some of those. I’m not trying to go overboard and join every place, more so looking cool and chill places to interact with people.

While I agree that this is useful, probably moreso than !newcommunities@lemmy.world, as I think that becoming aware of an established community is probably more-interesting than a newly-started one, I'd point out that the best place to go looking for new communities probably isn't on a Threadiverse community at all, but rather on lemmyverse.net, as that indexes all lemmy instances and provides searchability of instances:

Though it puts PieFed communities and Kbin magazines in a different section, while I'd rather have one search that covers all three systems, and somewhere in the translation from Kbin to Mbin (maybe it didn't index the mbin type?) it looks like support for Mbin got dropped, since I don't see fedia.io magazines on there.
Just as an aside, don't assume that a community is empty if there is no activity. If you find a community that sounds interesting, post something and you might get lurkers coming out of the woodwork.
Reddit is teeming with bots that keep every sub filled with content at a steady pace. They aren't here (yet?) and the silence takes some getting used to. Like if you want to talk about movies, for instance, there isn't always something to talk about every day. You can start a conversation if you're bored, but you won't find hourly "Which overrated movie villain would fit into a urethra with the least amount of lube?" engagement bait.

The other nice thing is that you make your own feed, and there's no central algorithm like Reddit that boosts specific communities. So you might subscribe to a community and there's no activity for months, but as soon as there's something worth posting, it will hit everyone who subscribes to it and start the conversation. Then, it might just go away again until something else interesting happens.
The way it should be.
I don't have many communities to offer but I do have advice. Do not be afraid to block people and communities you don't want to see. Lemmy is small enough that a single power user can completely alter your experience for better or worse. My block list is extensive because there are some people that aren't worth hearing from or engaging with. This is especially useful if you want to browse by all in order to find new communities.
Thanks for the advice SharkFucker420. And yeah I’m using this as a sort of filter, I just want things to be simple I guess, don’t want to deal with bullshit so won’t be afraid to block users or communities.

Hello and glad you're here! I had to start over after Lemm.ee got removed, but I stand by the same method I used years ago, just block communities you have no interest in. I usually upvote a few posts there to give them a little kiss farewell.
This is a good idea. I’m probably gonna start with more news/politically related communities. I’m so glad this place doesn’t have a news page like Reddit. I would find myself endlessly scrolling and viewing dumb posts with headlines like “this celebrity thinks that blah blah…” and then going to see what people are saying, and be like oh somehow has a ton of downvotes what did they say, and I’d be invested in an argument and then I’d catch myself and be like wait…I don’t give shit about this why I’m engaging with, let alone reading, the comments. Obviously important to stay informed but I wasted so much time scrolling through pointless “news” posts. I’m trying to avoid toxicity and engaging in stuff I don’t even care about only to get caught up in some dumb argument with an asshole
I like using !videos@lemmy.world as an alternative "frontend"/algorithm to YouTube. Could be more active, but hey there is only one way to fix that :)

When you find somebody's post really engaging or thoughtful, or their comment, look at their profile. See where else they post, see what communities they moderate. That's a great way to discover new and interesting things that you can vibe with

The best I can do is German or Linux, but at least you can have both!
You'll want to find the most active communities in whatever topics that you're interested in.
There are communities with high user counts, but low activity numbers, and the reverse is also true.
The best way that I've found to do this is with a Lemmyverse search, sorting the results by active users weekly or monthly.
Take this search for "anime" for example: https://lemmyverse.net/communities?query=anime&order=active
And if you find a community that's inactive, it's pretty easy to apply to the instance to become a moderator.
Or if you don't find a community for the topic at all, it's easy to make one!
I have something to add to my earlier comment about the Lemmyverse search:
Unfortunately it doesn't include communities from Lemmy-compatible networks like kbin and piefed.
That means that you'd be missing out on some large and active communities.
In particular some large communities that were hosted on the defunct lemm.ee moved to piefed, such as:

If you are getting the hang of navigation anyway you could maybe do that on Photon. An alternative more modern client which i really enjoy so far with active development.
If you still post on reddit, make a snarky signature for every post.
I just went through my reddit subs and subbed to anything that's over here. Downloaded Boost again. Feels the same, but quieter. I like it.

One suggestion: Niche communities are still not as active as Reddit. If that’s what you’re into, try to find the niche communities you’re into that are moderately active and try to leave comments daily. Or posts even. Be the change!
Yeah I’m starting to notice that. But I’m gonna keep exploring to get a feel for what I like and see what’s active and I’ll be sure to post and participate.
Nice! It's crazy how much difference just a little activity makes.
There are plenty of dead communities here, but even there you'll usually see a few folks around, upvoting when something does get posted.
But many of the communities I see that are active (beyond the biggest few topics) start out or mostly consist of just one or two people consistently posting. Every post or comment is a jump-in point where someone else may get involved.
