This is an underrated statement. Far too many want a parent / life manager instead of a partner.

Ugh, this! My dad constantly talked down to my mom and called her stupid. It definitely messed up my siblings and I idea of what it means to be a woman. I can’t believe that I thought she deserved it at times. It wasn’t until I had been out of the house for a few years that I could see clearly what was going on, and encouraged her to leave (she did, and is much happier now).

That's not good to be around, and not a good relationship to have modelled to you. I'm not surprised you started to think she deserved it, you were literally being taught that.
Agree with your point and glad you helped your mom fix her life ! The schoolmarm in me wants to point out it's "my siblings' and my idea"
My father was remarkably progressive for the times, especially considering he was in the military.
He still treated my mother as somewhat of a second class citizen in the home (despite treating her better than 99.44% of the men around him in our neighbourhoods around the world).
Anybody who thought women had it better off in the '50s is just plain ignorant. Literally the moment women could start initiating divorces, the divorce rate shot sky-high. This isn't the fault of being able to divorce…

Or that families must be 2 parents and kids. A single person could adopt a kiddo and - BAM - that's a family.

I'm 59. My parents were adults in the '50s. Their stories belie these claims about how "happy" people were in the '50s. But you already knew that and were just counting on demographics to save your lying ass.
