My childhood buddy's sister started smoking in grade 4. This was in the 90's. Growing up in the country is wild sometimes.
I first started smoking at 14, all because a girl I was into smoked too and she was my age. I only smoked around her, and later with other girlfriend I had at 15. It wasn't until I was 16 that I became a full time smoker. I smoked Marlboro reds in the box because a older guy I worked with roofing houses smoked and I thought he was cool.
Went on to ruin my clothes and body for 20 years before I wised up and quit.
Similar story: Older girl I liked when I was 13 smoked so I smoked. Guy I worked with smoked so I kept smoking for the next 35 years. I coughed up blood 18 months ago and stopped cold turkey that day. I still cough crap up on occasion, but glad I quit.
Congratulations on quitting.
Good on ya! I started late and quit early but smoking is a bitch. All these years later I miss it lol
He looks closer to 10-12.
He was actually 8 but smoking does a number on the skin
Not for much longer. Smoking ages you.
Correct. Assumed main reason for the typical 30-but-looks-like-50 phenomenon of the 70s and 80s.
That and no sunscreen.
13 years and 1 day old, maybe.
Kid had a hard shift in the mines.
By this point he’s the bassist in three bands.
And deputy prime Minister.
That kid is cooler than I'll ever be.
That kid looks dope af
Right?
Anytime someone says smoking isn’t cool you show them this picture
Holy head-dent batman!
I think it's a hat, but I had the same thought.
Might be a shot of the world's first gamer. Never know.
It's hair ...
That's a conspiracy. My boy here wears headphones for 15 hours a day like a proper gamer.
Tailor mades even. Probably a rich kid.
Don't know about that. The pullover screams "Inherited from bigger brothers and just still good enough for another round".
Yea cigarettes were a lot cheaper then, you could also buy single cigarettes at that time.
Maybe it was picture worthy because a 10 year old wasn't smoking a rollie.
Interesting connection I just made:
I was wondering about the Hamburg reference and if there was a connection to the Beatles (from Liverpool) mania of the 60s that started in Hamburg...
Turns out I have been right, the linked page basically says that the pic was part of a Beatles photo report of the Stern (famous German magazine from Hamburg) depicting the English youth culture of that time.
The other pics in the series are also worth a look!
