The post Xitter web has spawned soo many “esoteric” right wing freaks, but there’s no appropriate sneer-space for them. I’m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged “culture critics” who write about everything but understand nothing. I’m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. They’re inescapable at this point, yet I don’t see them mocked (as much as they should be)
Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldn’t be surgeons because they didn’t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I can’t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

- Why is it always transphobia with these kinds of people... is it because they feel racism is too risky? So they need a different outlet for hating on people based on what they believe is "science"?
  
  the answer to all those is yes. To synthesise the bigger idea, as the saying goes: scratch a liberal, a fascist bleeds. Gladwell caters to a huge audience that is centrist, leaning somewhat liberal (though he flirts constantly with race science and straight up racism, see his writings on Korean Air). As liberals move towards fascism, so must he. Of course, it’s the most marginalised that are going to be targeted first.

Where's the Shovelware? Why AI Coding Claims Don't Add Up
I should get a green screen for my videos. Suggestions welcomed.
I can't leave it up permanently, I need to be able to get it out and put it away each use without it being a massive PITA.
I record in a small room. It's tiny and awkwardly shaped and I'm fixed in place by perspective tricks (something I would like the green screen to alleviate).
Amazon is the least worst vendor in this circumstance if all else is equal.
Any ideas? Do any of you use such a device yourselves?
- Maybe you could paint the wall greenscreen, and hide it behind a tapestry when not in use. Then you wouldn't need a place to store or deploy the screen frame hardware.
  edit: froztbyte has a good point! To clarify, I mean only an appropriate square of wall that is in view of the camera. Also, I'm a deranged person that consumes pivot via podcast, so I don't know the layout of the room. A more clever person than I would have checked on that before offering a potentially impractical suggestion.

- Actual suggestion: maybe mount a roller blind to the ceiling. Might need extra weight to tension the blind but also might not.
  Also, you probably don’t need a totally green background, just enough to make masking easier. You could conceivably tape a big sheet of green cardboard to the back of your chair and see how that goes.
  Also: idk how hard or easy this is but if the camera position is fixed and the rest of the scene is static, maybe there’s software that can just mask out the static scene?

For context, it was an AI slop image, and he named it after Woit, and didn't provide any details from the email itself. While the whole affair is quite a good reason to at least put this persons name/email out there imho.

The last part is just nuts, whole bit of Rationalization why he is actually justified, and will change the world. Not realizing everyone was horrified because he created a thought experiment to justify a genocide:

this bit opens up so much questions, remarks and is just silly in some ways. Yes people who are dissatisfied will push for change, why is this a revelation? But do they have the power? Is it justified? Jared Taylor() also pushes for a changed morality system, but I wouldn't consider that desirable. It also leaves out that people will push for change because they just want to profit from it. Which is likely a lot bigger driver of change see the libertarian ls pushing for less regulations, because the dumb and distracted deserve to be scammed.

This is the first thing that pops up, a page detailing how WCK works with the IDF and how that is not in the best interests of Palestine.   It also is interesting, as Scott compared to the others we sneer at never really seems to break containment so to speak. I have seen people talk about Aella on bsky for example, Scott Alexander, Eliezer, lesswrong, EA, etc all come up. But Scott almost never does. (Yes, the 'untitled' affair was public, but that was a decade ago, and 6 months before r/sneerclub was created (and long before I joined) and also the whole broaden influence thing as you mentioned). And after all why should he, he is just a random professor, the only reason he is relevant for the broader picture is that he agrees with the AI doom stuff, and he gives the LW people some level of prestige (the only times I have brought him up is because he confirmed that Yarvin spends time personally emailing prestigious people like him but that is about Moldy). Well, seems I was pretty close - NBC news recently reported humans are being hired to clean up AI slop. My prediction it would be lucrative was off the mark, though - artists called in for de-slopping work are getting paid less than if they were simply hired to create the work themselves. Clearly, I was being overly optimistic.
You want my take, anyone who gets hired for slop cleanup should try to squeeze as much cash out their clients as much as possible - they showed open contempt for humanity by choosing a clanker, they need to be shown the consequences.
- Chiming in to agree your prediction write-ups aren't particularly good. Sure they spark discussion, but the whole forecasting/prediction game is one we've seen the rationalists play many times, and it is very easy to overlook or at least undercount your misses and over hype your successes.
  In general... I think your predictions are too specific and too optimistic...
- @froztbyte@awful.systems is coming in a bit hot, but they’re not fundamentally wrong. @BlueMonday1984@awful.systems, you’ve received some pointed but good feedback on your writing style recently in MoreWrite and in other threads; I think you’ll be able to make much the same points more persuasively if you incorporate some of that feedback. I also recommend breaking out of doing predictions; I think you might get more mileage and variation out of a journalistic approach, and either way we know from crypto that prediction is a bit of a fool’s errand. these fuckers will remain irrational long after we’ve gone bankrupt, etc.
  I’m not gonna force you to do anything; if posts like these are what you’re comfortable with then it is what it is. I just feel like if you break out of your current pattern, you’re capable of achieving great results.
  
  I was going to chime in to say something similar. I don't think trying to game out the possible reaction to the possible hype about the possible application, etc., etc., is the best use of anyone's time. It might be more beneficial to, for example, keep track of the cases where the guys selling "quantum" are the same guys who have been selling "AI" and "crypto".

Historically, the most important tantrum he's thrown is DJB v USA in 1995, where he insisted that folks in the USA have a First Amendment right to publish source code.   By my guess, the servers and datacentres powering the LLMs will end up as the AI bubble's Range Rover equivalent - they're obscenely expensive for AI corps to build and operate, and are practically impossible to finance without VC billions. Once the bubble bursts and the billions stop rolling in, I expect the servers to be sold off for parts and the datacentres to be abandoned.

As a CS student, I wonder why us and artists are always the one who are attacked the most whenever some new "insert tech stuff" comes out. And everyone's like: HOLY SHIT PROGRAMMERS AND ARTISTS ARE DEAD, without realizing that most of these things are way too crappy to actually be... good enough to replace us?
- My guess would be because most people don’t understand what you all actually do so gen AI output looks to them like their impression of the work you do. Just look at the game studios replacing concept artists with Midjourney, not grasping what concept art even is for and screwing up everyone’s workflow as a result.
  I’m neither a programmer nor an artist I can sorta understand how people get fooled. Show me a snippet of nonsense code or image and I’ll nod along if you say it’s good. But then as a writer (even if only hobbyist) I am able to see how godawful gen AI writing is whereas some non-writers won’t, and so I extrapolate from that since it’s not good at the thing I have domain expertise in, it probably isn’t good at the things I don’t understand.
  
  I feel like aggressive proponents of genAI are so because they are intimidated and/or jealous of the people they say they will replace. They lack the skills and critical thinking to become good at the task they want to replace, but also unwilling or unable to put in the work.
  Instead of reckoning with this, they construct a phantasm where artists are "gatekeeping art", and genAI is going to disrupt that gatekeeping. Meanwhile I think deep down they know that what genAI produces is derivative by definition, and not "real art" by any means.

What are some serious software/hardware companies that have NOT participated in the AI bubble? No AI nonsense in their marketing slides, no mentions of AI on their landing page, etc.

  On a wider note, I expect it'll be primarily art-related software/hardware companies that will have avoided AI participation - with how utterly artists have rejected the usage of AI, and resisted its intrusion into their spaces, the companies working with them likely view rejecting AI as an easy way of earning good PR with their users, and embracing it as a business liability at best, and a one-way trip past the trust thermocline at worst.
