i wonder how well these would fare in a crash with the average newer american sized suv's and pickup trucks.

Why not just a bakfiets?

- Different use cases, the cargo bike is to haul cargo and kids around.
  
  A velomobile is better suited to travel long distances, specially in bad weather.
  
  Carbikes, like the ones in the video, can be used for both. I've seen plenty of cargo carbikes used by businesses and delivery couriers.
