FS TAB - 3 syllables
F STAB - 2 syllables
The choice is clear.
52ReplyFSTAB (silent F) - 1 syllable
19ReplyYes FS TAB.
Since when has Linux been about taking the easy way out?
13ReplyI mean, it's literally shorthand already for filesystem table innit?
2Reply
We geeks do not care about syllables! We are the ones who "shortened" the 3 syllable "World Wide Web" to the 9 syllable "www"!
10ReplyStill only 3 syllables in German 🤷
3Reply"Dub dub dub" is 3 syllables
2Reply
By this logic we should just fuse the f and s for a monosyllabic word.
7ReplyI just call it the filesystem table?
2Reply
Filesystem Table.
It’s a shortening. Not a shortening of File Systemtable though.
41ReplyThanks for the information, but I started calling it f stab, an I shall continue to do so.
23Reply
I literally didn't put it together that it was FS-Tab until a couple years ago when I was setting up an encrypted drive manually in
/etc/crypttab
, something I had done many times before, when it finally clicked.I've used Linux heavily for about 15 years.
28ReplySame, mentally I called it f stab for years and it dawned on me after using Linux for well over ten years.
8Reply
Reading this meme (a while ago) is how I found out it's not pronounced f stab
27ReplyHuh.... Been using Linux for 20 years, only just learned the origins of fstab.
How embarrassing.
13Replywow, it never occured to me that it meant file system table. I feel like fstabl would have made more sense then. although it probable would have just become "fuhstabul"
11Replyfuhstabul
Or is it constanstinobul?
9ReplyFuhzantium?

This was decided at a time when single bytes for a file name was still valuable space. This is why vi is vi and not visual. UNIX is more than 50 years old :)

Wow whooshing sounds... Today I learned.
7ReplyI just need it to be F STAB
5ReplyF I L E S Y S T E M T A B L E
5ReplyI say it kinda like fuhs tab

Others know.
