I think it is more than that, the shower is a proper refuge where external stimuli is severely limited. Sounds are limited by the running water, temperature is controlled by the water, visuals are limited, and no one is generally barging in.
When I was studying math at University I had a remarkable number of eureka moments in the shower where suddenly infinity made sense. Smart phones didn't really exist then but showers still held power as a great place to think
After finishing up calculus and differential equations taking real analysis was a trip! Basically opening up the box that is calculus and seeing why taking the derivative of a function means dropping the exponent and so much more. It frequently dealt with infinity and we went from writing long equations to solving word problems involving infinite doors. It was great
my experience studying math was the same, so many concepts clicked when i was in the shower. a bit later on, a lot of the eureka moments in research projects happened in the shower too. i’ve wondered how common it is in other fields to be doing a considerable chunk of the research in the shower.
Most phones made now it seems are rated for being able to go underwater. I wouldn't go swimming with mine or anything, but it often gets wet and it's fine. The touchscreen doesn't really work when wet, because it thinks it's being touched all over. That's the only part that needs to stay dry to operate in the shower.
It’s weird, I read and respond to texts and listen to audiobooks on my phones speaker in the shower all the time. There’s a ledge outside of the water spray so it’s easy to navigate. I mean texts can usually wait but the ability to continue my audiobook from my headphones to my phone speakers for showering is key.
I have an old shitty shower/hot water heater it takes like five minutes for it to even get lukewarm so I usually dick around for five minutes while the water heats up
I don't understand the people who say that they use their phones in the shower. I can't even change songs on my phone if it gets water on it because the touch screen gets buggy. Also, what do you even do on your phone in the shower? It's not a hands-off activity.
I usually listen to a podcast in the shower - bought a cheap shower phone holder on Amazon. Sometimes I browse ~reddit~ Lemmy in the shower - phone is just held in front of me a bit to keep it out of the water, works fine.
I hold my phone in one hand, out of the stream of water, and browse RedditLemmy, Twitter, YouTube, whatever I feel like browsing. During this time, I'm not cleaning myself, I'm just standing, enjoying the hot water, and reading whatever I'm reading.
With that said, I've stopped doing this because it's a huge waste of water and money.
I sometimes listen to music or watch videos in the shower. I double-bag it in clear plastic bags, and then put it in a safe location. When I change songs or videos, I can interact with the screen like normal. Maybe it's just my phone or the plastic bags I use--maybe both?
I use something like below, minus the ziplock:
I suppose there are actual products meant for making phones more waterproof in these situations, but I didn't bother looking for those.
Watching videos isn't that weird. I tend to try to rush showers and wouldn't be able to watch my phone while doing 90% of my washing, but it's not that crazy. I've always used a Bluetooth speaker for listening to music in the shower. It's much easier and doesn't require me touching my phone.
I prop mine up on one of my little shelves outside the stream of water and put videos on. One of the streaming apps has an ability to block touch input, which is great to avoid splashes of water setting off the screen. I have a lot of hair that likes to rats nest when wet and I get easily bored & don't enjoy being in my own mind, so putting on a show helps.
Nofap is like a cult and the folks from that sub spread a lot of really stupid misinformation. Masturbation is healthy, safe, and a basic human need... but like everything it should be done in moderation. It reduces the change of prostate cancer, and keeps the pipes clean.
Google assistant is like Siri, Alexa, Bixby or Cortana.
A AI assistant, Google includes it in almost every smartphone in some way, that they have control of.
You know those crazy ideas you get in the shower? You can shout at Google to take a note before you forget them or ask Google questions to figure out whether your idea will work out.
Man, I can't even imagine wanting to bring my phone into the shower. "Just standing" there, alone with my thoughts, hot water relaxing muscles... Nothing needs me, I need nothing, the world is on hold until further notice. It's meditative: Everything ceases mattering, ceases even existing - to resume later, of course, but in the meantime, perfect, relaxed, complete solitude. It's perfect as it is. Music or videos or reading would ruin it. That's all outside stuff, the outside should not exist.
It never even occurred to me that people would bring phones into the shower to actually do things. Never even imagined that that was a thing. Learn something new every day.
"Just standing" there, alone with my thoughts" yeah that's the reason I have my phone in with me, usually with whatever show I'm watching at the time, being alone with my thoughts isn't a good thing for me, I need something to focus on so I don't have a stream of consciousness filling up my head.
Man the future is crazy. Is it even ethical to resurrect a bioprinted copy of Mohammed Ali just for a chance to have sex with him in the shower?
Imagine being a bioprinted boxer from the 20th century, knowing without knowing how you know, that you’re in the distant future and that the moment you step out of the shower you’ll be painlessly destroyed, but not really caring because you have an irresistible urge for the person ogling you and you seem strangely obsessed with soaping them up.
i have used all of mine in the shower for the last 10 years or longer. i keep a dry towel where i can reach it to dry my hands if i want to switch hands, or the screen if it gets splashed.
i even bring my ebook reader in here from time to time.
just dont hold them in the water and they are fine.
I've used my smartphone in the shower a handful of times already, but I usually take steps to double bag it (put it in a clear plastic bag upside down first, fold the excess, then put it in another clear plastic bag the right way up this time). I also just let it play music/video so that I can listen/watch while I shower.
The way my brain works, I can have "shower thoughts" while in the middle of posting a short comment. Lack of external stimuli simply increases the noise up there.
I don't use the phone in the bathroom.
I just let my third eye open and find new ideas, fixes to my problems for the day. I can't imagine being on that state of mind longer tho, because the mind tend to wonder in dark places that forcefully resurface painful memories that lingers all day. Kinda a bummer.
I must say I use the phone a lot in the shower.
I get bored really easily and I constantly need something to interest me. I watch youtube mostly. Stuff I dont need to touch the phone constantly cos wet finger doesnt work with the capacitive screen.
I bring my phone into the shower. Not directly into the water stream, but in the shower room.
Phone is IP68 rated and I have a accidental damage protection plan. (I get the protection plan mainly for lost and theft, but it also covers accidental damage)
Funnily enough I tend to have most of my "shower thoughts" while listening to music on the bus or train. In the shower I just try to relax and not really think about anything.
