I'm not the person you originally replied to. At no point have I dismissed ChatGPT.

I disagree with your logic about the definition of AI. Intelligence is the ability to acquire, understand, and use knowledge. A chess-playing AI can see the board, understand the ramifications of each move, and respond to how the pieces are moved. That makes it intelligent - narrowly so, but intelligent nonetheless. And since it’s artificial too, it fits the definition of AI.

What's your point?

I don't think a murdered deserves to die but I think killing them in self defence is perfectly justfied.

Recognizing colored blocks in an image was AI until someone figured out a good way to do it. Playing chess at grandmaster levels was AI until someone figured out how to do it.

You make it sound like these systems stopped being AI the moment they actually succeeded at what they were designed to do. When you play chess against a computer it's AI you're playing against.

The key word there is seemingly. The technology itself had existed for a long time, but it wasn’t until the massive leap OpenAI made with it that it actually became popular. Before ChatGPT, 99% of people had never heard of LLMs, and now everyone has. That’s what I mean when I say it appeared seemingly out of nowhere - it took the masses by surprise. There’s no reason to assume another company working on a different approach to AI won’t make a similar massive breakthrough, giving us AI far more powerful than LLMs and taking everyone by surprise, despite the base technology having existed for a long time.

It is AI though - a subset of generative AI to be specific, but it still falls under the AI category.

Well, that’s not true. Thanks to CRISPR, we’ve been making huge leaps in medicine. Solar panels are getting better and cheaper. Battery development is advancing at a rapid pace. Satellite internet now enables wireless communication anywhere in the world. And LLMs provide lonely people with someone to talk to, anytime and anywhere.

There are countless of other examples like this. It's not that none of this technology is used for good. We just seem to be addicted at focusing on all the negatives.

Technology moving forward doesn’t mean you have to move with it. In fact, there’s an advantage in realizing when something is good enough and that you don’t need a better version. Smartphones, for example, haven’t added a single feature I need since around 2016. In many ways, they’ve even regressed, using more fragile materials for aesthetics and removing useful features like the headphone jack. Back then, I needed to invest in flagship models to get something I liked, but now the flagship models are overkill for what I need, so I can just go with a mid-range device instead.

The same applies to cars. My truck is from 2007 and has every feature I need, without the ones I don’t. I have no intention of upgrading anytime soon. I can just keep replacing broken parts for a fraction of the cost it would take to do the same on a newer model.

Nobody ever deserves to be shot. That's completely incompatible with my worldview. However, sometimes it's justified.

In all seriousness, killing him clearly wasn’t the optimal solution, but it shows once again that the 'innocent' people getting shot by police are rarely so innocent after all.

A self-driving car is able to observe its surroundings, identify objects and change its behaviour accordingly. Thus a self-driving car is intelligent. What's driving such car? AI.

You're free to disagree with how other people define words but then don't take part in their discussions expecting everyone to agree with your definiton.

LLM's are not the only type of AI out there. ChatGPT appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Whose to say the next AI system wont do that as well?

If it’s a modern, quality bike from a reputable brand, virtually all the parts on it are standardized and used on other bikes as well. A bike brand, such as 'Specialized,' mainly refers to the frame. All the other components are the same ones used by other similar brands.

The rise of the robots isn’t what most 'AI doomers' are worried about. What a truly malicious AGI could do would be along the lines of simulating your consciousness and placing you in eternal simulated hell. However, the more realistic fear is that it might treat us the way we treat ants. We have nothing against them, but we’ll wipe out a colony without a second thought if we need to build a house there.

One of my previous customers was a mentally ill and delusional elderly lady. She called me about a non-existent plumbing problem in her house, supposedly caused by her neighbor, who she claimed breaks in and messes with her stuff. According to her, everything wrong inside or outside her house was because of her neighbor's sabotage. She even mentioned plans to kill him. Not exactly the kind of person you want to turn your back on, but also someone who would have been extremely easy to take advantage of. I basically talked her out of redoing the entire plumbing in her bathroom, and we finally settled on me re-aligning her kitchen cabinet doors that - yes, you guessed it - her neighbor had 'messed with.'

It was quite sad, really. She asked me twice whether I thought her stories sounded crazy, so she was clearly somewhat aware of her condition. I just didn’t know how to deal with someone like that. I refuse to lie, but I also don’t want to tell her she’s losing it. I don’t mind senile people, but I didn’t feel safe around her.

Many things. For example, every single president during my lifetime has been almost universally liked by everyone in the country - kind of like a lifetime of Obamas.

Not everyone has the same flaws to the same extent. It's probably more of a spectrum than a yes or no thing. I'd say it's a safe bet to say we all suffer from this - some more than others.
