  • That's a very simple way of putting things imo :)

The west also has internet access. Some people still end up hateful/believing in flat earth/conspiracy theories.

That doesn't mean they're bad people, just very misguided.

  • Fair enough :)

I just don't see how believing the worst in your fellow human can encourage you to improve things.

  • Man, every time I see videos like that, my heart breaks. Those are actual human beings with families, loved ones, hopes and dreams... (I know Russia does much worse things to the other side, but that doesn't change the feeling. Most conscripts are just brainwashed cannon fodder :()

    Fuck war so much...

  • I hate that pov so much.

Humanity is fantastic, wonderful, loving and amazing. It's not a shit hole.

I'd argue society is really broken in some places, but not humanity.

As for Social media: it just brings out some dark side in some people. The vast majority of people on social media behave. It's just that the outliers catch the attention.

  • How? If you just install windows software and follow the installer, it just works no? I've never ran into issues using software written for windows. There might be issues with the software itself, but I've never had issues with the installation procedure.

  • Windows just works tbh. If you don't want to do anything out of the ordinary, it does exactly what it says on the box.

  • From a non hardcore Foss pov (I use linux on an old machine to tinker, but I don't enjoy it. It takes too much energy to get random shit working. My old random Bluetooth usb dongle I had laying around was not compatible with linux? Took me a fucking week to figure that out... ): w11 is as good as windows has ever been.

It does exactly what you want and lets your os mainly stay out of your way of doing other stuff.

All the people complaining about ads and shit: I use Vivaldi and turned off notifications in the side panel. I basically never notice I use windows, except that stuff just works. No fucking around with drivers, random old usb devices just work. All apps I download just work. Never need any serious OS troubleshooting for daily use.

Maybe windows spies on certain things I do? That sucks balls. But I also enjoy watching tiktok on the loo and I still use Facebook to connect with relatives all over the world. It sucks, but I've taken my peace with that fact that true privacy online is gone for average Joe. In the end it's just metadata. Who cares that instagram knows I like to look at ladies underwear...

  • Oh yeah, one hundred percent. The only reason I got kids was to make sure they can take care of my retirement.

Just as I'm taking care of my parents. I have totally absolutely 100% not broken off all contact with them because of their shitty behaviour. No sir, absolutely not.

  • I'll believe it when I see it. There's new battery tech every other week. 99,9% never goes anywhere

  • Let's see who will pay for your retirement and medical care eventually... (unless if you live in that US hellscape ofcourse)

  • Please don't leave your house, and if you do, please for the love that might be holy don't do it in areas actually inhabited by people.

  • Corporate speak sucks, but it's 100x better than Linus digging an ever deeper hole for himself at this time. Dude and his wife just need to take a backseat for a while and let pros fix their shit

  • Not their choice, but "Homosexuality is a choice".

To use a really dumb argument I've heard before.

  • I'm fairly certain he's against it due to his upbringing and never bothering to question his "beliefs" on the topic.

"Homosexuality is weird and wrong" (and it makes me doubt my own sexuality and masculinity) is probably the only driver behind it.

  • My elderly father would probably catch on fire if he steps into a church. But he shares basically all social values with hardcore Christians.

You can be a non believer, that was raised in a certain belief system and as such share their shitty values. I would imagine this is much more common with older atheists/agnostics/don't-care-about-religion,-only-myselfionists

  • I mean.. Buy a 50usd tablet to read pdf's and do some casual browsing. Steam decks are made for gaming.

    I don't understand some people :)

  • Yeah. And it's a shame when they "ban" something, there aren't like hundreds of different instances that can still easily access that content.

Some smart people should really come up with a decentralized federated system so these "bans" become total non-issues.

    Ah well, one can dream.

  • Way to misunderstand federation + legal issues... Go cry foul on reddit, they share your "outrage" mindset

Just make an account on another server that is federated with them.

  • My work uses mifare cards if I recall it correctly. Using a simple nfc emulator app on a rooted phone, I could just clone the card instantly and use my phone to enter anywhere the card could.

This had obvious big security repercussions. Someone with bad intentions could just walk past you and copy the card. So they added personalized pin codes to all cards, every poor sod in the company now has to touch their badge + give in a pincode for you pretty much all doors. They are currently in the progress of renewing the entire security system to upgrade the security of the cards. (at great cost :))

So depending on the type of card used, it might be possible. I've tried it with many different security cards, it only worked with the one from my company. So it really depends on the type of card used.

I think it was this app, but I'm not 100% positive. Haven't rooted my new phone due to other security reasons, so I haven't tinkered with it lately.
