Most Americans want to electrify their homes — if they can keep their gas stoves
  • In addition to the other comments about it being just as quick, if not faster and easier to get a consistent heat, I also found the noise level was way better - it'll hum if the pan isn't centered properly, and the power is turned up, but when simmering, it's pretty much silent which was weird but suprisingly nice.

Do we live in a computer simulation like in The Matrix? Proposed new law of physics backs up the idea
  • The latest season of Futurama actually illustrated this, that due to time being relative you can just slow down the simulation to reduce the requirement to run at a 1:1 performance ratio with our current environment.
It also describes that someone from flatland wouldn't be able to tell that they're missing out on a dimension, or quality, because it's their only frame of reference.

Definitely not scientific in approach, but it is thought provoking around the possibility of a simulated existence.

The best Android phone to buy in 2023 - The Verge
  • I've only had 1 phone in the last 10 years that didnt wirelessly charge, and there's zero chance I'd buy a phone without it again. And I'm really hoping qi2 starts appearing in phones next year.

I don't understand the need for super fast charging, like it's handy if you're on the run and forgot about it, but I need more charging than my phone does, so it's no issue to just plonk it on a stand when I'm resting....

Nearly Half of EV Owners Would Switch Back to Combustion Engine Vehicles: Study
  • Looking at Tesla's support the US is crippled by the 120v power grid for wall charging, 3 Miles per hour on a standard 120v plug, and 23kmh on an Australian 240v 15A plug.

Tesla owners fuming as they get £17,000 bill to fix car after 'driving in rain'
  • And not to mention it was water ingress into the bloody batteries, they're lucky (or maybe unlucky in this case) that the car didn't burn down from the Lithium...

Nokia to cut as many as 14,000 jobs as profit drops by 69%
  • HMD Global is a Finnish company, run by ex-Nokia executives. It's pretty nuch the old Nokia, seperated enough to not bankrupt the original company if it goes bad.

The phones are no more Chinese than Google and Apple.

  • Likewise, pay for full Nitro, I can afford it and it's a platform I use frequently and enjoy, I'm glad they let others who can't pay for Nitro have a pretty much equivalent service for free.

It's not free to run a platform, and it's unreasonable to demand everything for free. It could be more reasonably priced (basic is not too bad), but honestly I'm okay with subsidising others for something like this.

Nvidia Says Native Resolution Gaming is Out, DLSS is Here to Stay
  • I'm one of those people that uses DLSS, because I've got a large fancy 4k monitor that is big enough that is looks like shit at lower resolutions.

DLSS is better than nothing but it's no replacement for native rendering, it introduces a heap of visual anomalies and inconsistencies, especially in games with a consistent motion (racing games look like shit with DLSS), so I tend to be having lows of 50fps on medium before I'll even think about DLSS.
I'm also pretty sure Nvidia is paying devs to have it on by default, because everytime it's patched into a game they clear all the current graphics settings to turn on DLSS, at least in my experience.

Google won’t repair cracked Pixel Watch screens

Microsoft cuts ties with the Surface Duo after just 2 Android version updates
  • The upgrade support for Windows 11 is so frustrating. I clean installed it on a 6th Gen Intel (not supported) using a Windows 7 Key, using the offical installer from USB without any changes... Fully expected it not to work, but I had the installer ready from another PC and gave it a shot.

Todd Howard asked on-air why Bethesda didn't optimise Starfield for PC: 'We did [...] you may need to upgrade your PC'
  • Completed some testing on my end, using intels PresentMon and sitting at 35fps average in New Atlantis my GPU busy is pegged at about 99% of the frame time, so nothing really.

I do get a bit of a CPU limitation when it's raining, but nothing significant, dropped to about 30fps.

Trying at 1440p with the same settings as the 3090 above got me around 50fps, 1440p is almost half the pixels of 80% of 4k as well, so that's not helping my GPU much!

Todd Howard asked on-air why Bethesda didn't optimise Starfield for PC: 'We did [...] you may need to upgrade your PC'
  • I've got an 8086K and 3080, running on a 4K screen - with Ultra settings and FSR of 80% I'm getting 35-40fps, which honestly doesn't feel too bad. It's noticable sometimes but it's a lot smoother than the numbers suggest.

Because my CPU is a little long in the tooth, I've gone probably a bit hard on the visuals, but my framerate didn't improve much by lowering it. The engine itself has never really liked going past 60fps, so I don't know why people expected to be able to run 100+ frames at 4k or something.

[Solved] I'd like to switch from chrome, but all of my auto fill, and payment info.
  • Tldr; chromium based browers are more vulnerable to password stealing malware because they encrypt with the OS user creds, Firefox would probably avoid this with a master password, as thats the primary protection of this that password managers offer.
