Federal judge extends block on Biden’s student debt forgiveness plan
  • The interest all together doesn’t stop accruing but I think the parent commenter was trying to say that the interest will no longer accrue for the portion you’ve paid off. (The same as any other loan) So, if you continue to make your payments, you’re not getting extra screwed because of these shenanigans. No more than you’ve already been screwed at least.

Or is there something unique about this that is preventing people from making payments?

Effectiveness of hi-vis in car traffic
  • This was a surprising tidbit. I’d love to hear some hypotheses of why this might be the case. It seems surprising that a motorcycle would result in more deaths than a car. I wonder if this holds true year over year. I tried to find more info but couldn’t really find anything and I wasn’t going to pay 50 dollars for the article.

Seems like a relatively low number of deaths caused by motorcycles though, so it seems like death by cars/light trucks should be our main focus. (Just as long as it doesn’t result in more people driving busses or, apparently, motorcycles)

I do hate how loud some motorcycles are.

  • Blue means the other person has an iPhone, green means android (or not an iPhone)

I think the joke may have been that it doesn’t matter because the driver is looking at their phone anyway. (But I’m not sure)

Group of US Republican attorneys general, funded by oil firms and dark money, blocking climate laws.
  • I know it’s the sources title but it’s a confusing one. For a minute, I was surprised that there were a group of Republican attorney generals blocking climate laws that were being pushed by the oil companies.

Turns out the title should be Group of US Republican attorneys general, funded by oil firms and dark money, blocking climate laws.

  • What exactly is this sub?

AI written articles about potential dystopian outcomes?

Although, I think it’d be amazing if everyone’s salary was published. At my work, we have a spreadsheet where we all post our salaries.

Why does traditional masculinity have such longevity, even among younger boys?
  • I’ve seen plenty of people equate toxic masculinity to “traditional masculinity” (for lack of a better term) and make fun of guys that fit that mold or, alternatively, get very defensive as though you were attacking their hobbies.

I agree with your sentiment though. I just think.. since toxic masculinity hasn’t been clearly defined and what’s toxic will vary significantly from one person to another… that a much better term is “prescribed masculinity”. It also helps prevent that knee jerk reaction some will have when you bring up the term. (I find most folks will agree that prescribed masculinity is a fucked concept, but may get defensive over the concept of “toxic masculinity”)

Also I’m not a car person but that’s a slick looking car.

Why does traditional masculinity have such longevity, even among younger boys?
  • This is a bit off topic, but I really dislike terms like toxic masculinity or traditional masculinity.

I prefer talking about it in terms of “prescribed masculinity” which I think is the actual problem here. If you enjoy being a sports bro, who lifts weights, and is really into cars. Awesome! If you enjoy table top games and reading, awesome! Something completely different? Believe it or not, also awesome! As long as you’re not using it as an excuse to be an asshole to someone, men should pursue whatever will make their life the most fulfilling. But as far as defining masculine as some specific traits or interests, fuck that noise.

My friend is acting really weird with my girlfriend
  • 14 days later… but this was an interesting story and it even had something resembling a happy ending! Thanks for sharing it.

Sounds like you have some good introspection skills and were able to identify that the problem was, at least partially, with you… and were able to get over that to salvage your friendship. His wife even seems supportive of your friendship, even though you’re not her jam.

2 Kids Killed, 9 Injured in Knife Attack at Taylor Swift-Themed Dance Event
  • “Britain’s worst attack on children occurred in 1996, when 43-year-old Thomas Hamilton shot 16 kindergarten pupils and their teacher dead in a school gymnasium in Dunblane, Scotland. The U.K. subsequently banned the private ownership of almost all handguns.”

  • I’m a fan of slice of life type movies that showcase a point of time in someone’s life, a relationship, or culture.

Big fan of movies like About Elly, Twelve Angry Men, Ikiru.

I have the Criterion and Arrow video streaming services and like to pick random movies on there from time to time.

Any recommendations would be highly appreciated!

I have a monthly board game meetup with my neighbors, who are mostly in their 60s and 70s. I’m a bit younger than them but it’s usually a good time. Complexity of rules, eye sight, and maneuverability are all big concerns when I host.

I decided to give Ready Set Bet a go… and it was a hit! I shared my phone screen to a good sized tv in the room and let the app run the race. I sat the less nimble folks closer to the center of the table, with younger folks nearer to the edge. Additionally, I read off the extra bet cards every round and did all the math for everyone when they won. I was worried the VIP cards would be too much, but everyone seemed to enjoy them. Lots of shouting and racing to bet.

So, if you have a party of 9 or fewer consider giving it a shot.

If you have any suggestions for party games that might fit this crowd, I’d love to hear them.
