What would you change about your favorite Linux distribution?
  • For Fedora, replace the current installer (Anaconda) with the openSUSE Tumbleweed installer.

One of the aspects I love about the openSUSE TW installer is the ability to remove groups of packages for the initial install. This is particularly useful if you never use certain programs or intend to replace them with the Flatpak version.

  • Turning on the iPhone’s Stolen Device Protection is simple—it’s just one small toggle in your phone’s settings.

There is one crucial detail that the article doesn't mention: Find My iPhone must be enabled to enable SDP. That is to say, enabling Find My (along with biometric authentication) is a prerequisite for SDP.

What's the best strategy for changing to GrapheneOS?
  • The official GrapheneOS Twitter account states the complete opposite on several occasions:

    https://nitter.net/GrapheneOS/status/1692002070650335259#m

Many people have the misconception that they're defeating the purpose of GrapheneOS by using privacy invasive apps but in fact the opposite is true. If you want to use those apps, then using GrapheneOS allows you to protect your privacy from them far better than another OS.

    https://nitter.net/GrapheneOS/status/1728630943886270827#m

GrapheneOS arguably makes the biggest difference for someone who is going to be using a bunch of mainstream apps including very privacy invasive ones. They need features like Storage Scopes and Contact Scopes more.

    https://nitter.net/GrapheneOS/status/1745532453215781151#m

You'll substantially benefit from our privacy and security features without making significant changes to your apps. In fact, you'll benefit more from features like Storage Scopes, Contact Scopes, Sensors toggle, etc. if you use a bunch of very privacy invasive apps.

[Kind of weekly thread] What have you been watching?
  • I watched the first three episodes of the recently released Percy Jackson series.

The book series was a big part of my childhood, and I was mildly excited for the TV series (read: hoped that it was better than the film series).

I'm still debating if I should finish the TV series. I found a particular detail in the third episode that convinced me that I am not the show's target audience:

At the end of episode three...

I expected Percy to pull a fast one and ship Medusa's severed head to Gabe. Instead, it looks like he actually shipped it to Olympus.

Pixel owners, what are your thoughts about GrapheneOS?
  • literally a stock Pixel phone with missing features

Does the stock Pixel operating system have a network permission toggle that can limit any app's access to the internet pre- or post-install?

Does the stock Pixel OS have storage scopes or contact scopes, both of which give you granular control over what data an app can see/access?

You SHOULD connect to Tor via a VPN, actually
  • To add on to the video transcript that @jet@hackertalks.com posted, here is Jonah's post from the Privacy Guides forum that more or less summarizes the video: https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/clarify-tors-weaknesses-with-respect-to-observability/3676/14

It also includes links to useful resources and noteworthy articles referenced in the video, like the case regarding the deanonymized Tor user and the Harvard network admins. You can also toggle dark mode on the forum website, which is useful for those using anti-fingerprinting browsers such as Tor Browser or Mullvad Browser.

[Weekly thread] What have you been watching lately?
  • A few days ago, I watched Total Recall (1990) for the first time. There are quite a few moments that just sent me into fits of laughter (e.g., Johnnycab and "two weeks"). These funny moments are offset by the seriousness of the Venusville plot and the film's exposition of Mars.

One thing that did take me out of the film briefly was when Arnie's character breaks out of his restraints (in the third act) by simply brute force because he is so jacked.
