Trump Voters Trust Ex-President More Than Their Family and Friends: Poll
  • It's terrifying how similar the Trump playbook is to that of a cult leader. Convincing someone that they must trust you over their family and friends is step one to getting them isolated and exploitable.

Pastor alarmed after Trump-loving congregants deride Jesus' teachings as 'weak'
  • Problem is that the morality taught by Christianity, and most other large organized religions, is extremely outdated and has spent many hundreds of years being corrupted by those in power to oppress others. I mean these people literally believe that God will punish our entire society if we don't eradicate LGBTQ groups. I actually think these people would be much more tolerant of others if they had never encountered organized religion and just learned to coexist with others organically.

Tech workers react to UPS drivers landing a $170,000 a year package with a mixture of anger and admiration
  • Wow good for UPS workers. As a tech worker I can say I'm genuinely happy for them. They have a hard ass job. A win for labor is a win for labor, regardless of which type.

How does everyone feel about Google Pixel phones?
  • I've been using a Pixel 3 for about 5 years and I love it. I actually got a pixel 7 for work earlier this year and honestly prefer the pixel 3 lol. I've had some charging issues because lint gets stuck in the charge port, but I've been able to mostly solve those by cleaning out the port with a toothpick.

Sync for Lemmy is now available for everyone
  • Yup that is a real rough pill to swallow when the default is free AND no ads. If I'm going to drop money on lemmy I'd rather just donate to whoever is hosting my instance.

High school boys are trending conservative
  • Unfortunately fascism can't actually work without an "other" to be a scapegoat. Fascism frames history as the struggle of an infallible ethnostate towards prosperity. Therefore any imperfection in the state is the result of the influence of "others" working against the state. Without an "other" fascists would actually need to take responsibility for society's shortcomings.

High school boys are trending conservative
  • It's important to recognize that fascists are not evil comic book villains. If you are a member of their ethnostate they will come off quite pleasant. They will say "You are beautiful, you are kind, you are wise. We are building a utopia and we'd like you to join us." Then eventually they will say "We cannot build a utopia because they stand in our way. They are ugly, they are cruel, they are stupid." And then before you know it you are building gas chambers.

‘I’m not wanted’: Florida universities hit by brain drain as academics flee
  • While this would make a big statement, the real victims would be innocent teenagers. Arguably we should be doing the opposite and trying to get as many of them out of that state as possible.

Meta Just Proved People Hate Chronological Feeds
  • We investigated ourselves and found we did nothing wrong.

But in all seriousness, this feels like the chronological feed given to users was just a straw man intended to make their algorithm look better. Also the claim in the article that Meta's algorithm does not impact users politics is completely ridiculous and not at all supported by a study like this.

Bryan Cranston Tells Bob Iger ‘Our Jobs Will Not Be Taken Away’ by AI in Rousing Speech: You Will Not ‘Take Away Our Dignity’
  • It's actually very different. An AI is not something that you just go build and then it's immediately useful. One an AI is built it needs to be trained in a process where it is exposed to examples of real works (text, image, video, etc) and "learns" how to reproduce similar works. This learning process involves using the real works to fine tune parameters of a large mathematical model. These tuned parameters are what make the AI an AI and not just a useless pile of random numbers. So arguably, the owner of every work used to train the model is as much a contributor to the AI as the AI company itself.

These media companies not only want to use artists' works to train a model that they will not be given any ownership of, they want to also own the rights to an artist's image and likeness to be able to reproduce that image and likeness in a potentially infinite number of derived works without needing to compensate the artist.

Family died in Rockies after trying to live ‘off the grid,’ official says
    • Maintaining a balance of calories in vs out is really hard. In particular fats are extremely difficult to acquire.
    • Getting almost anything done requires hard manual labor, which means you need even more calories.
    • Harsh winters mean food scarcity and burning even more calories just keeping warm.
    • You're completely fucked if you get sick or injured.
    • Boredom, loneliness and stress could drive you insane.

What have you been playing and what do you think of it? 07/16/2023
  • Pillars of Eternity 2. I'm not all that far in, but I've been loving it so far. The characters and story feel really well crafted, and there's just a ton of variability in how you can construct your party and progress. Hopefully the quality continues throughout since the first POE felt like it ended abruptly.
