What's your financial cutoff point on game collecting?
  • Tough one - I don't have a hard cutoff, but I've certainly started to slow down on buying retro games. I've spent over $200 CAD on a single game in recent memory (2022?), nowadays I wouldn't really want to go over $100 CAD.
    I've also been reevaluating and selling off some of my collection whenever I can buy ports / digital versions of some games (eg: Chrono Trigger, bought on Steam and sold my loose SNES cart, Xenogears bought on PS3 and sold my CIB copy, etc).
    I only focus on two retro systems - SNES and PS1 - and I don't really play on OG hardware anyways (Super Nt / Pocket for SNES, PS3 / Vita for PS1), so I don't mind "owning" digital and ultimately downloading roms if necessary.

    Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of July 7th
  • I'm still playing Persona 3 Reload and I believe it finally clicked for me.
    I still don't particularly like Tartarus that much, but I've been able to complete each section relatively quickly so far (and without grinding) so it's certainly not too bad. The rest of the game has definitely opened up though (thankfully, I'm about 30-35 hrs in, haha).

    Slowly making my way through Jeanne d'Arc on the side - gameplay wise it's up my alley (minus grinding...), however the story is pretty subpar imo.

    Saturn Radiant Silvergun Just Got A Major Fan-Made Update | Time Extension
  • This is awesome. Radiant Silvergun isn't my most played shmup to date but it's definitely so so unique, I really enjoy it.
    I certainly think romhacks/patches are a major benefit to older gen titles and I'm somewhat concerned we'll lose that with newer gens.

  • I picked up quite a few games - Deathsmiles, DoDonPachi Resurrection, Mega Man X Legacy Collection, Mushihimesama, ProtoCorgi, Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds Saga, TMNT Shredder's Revenge and Ultrakill.

    I've only played ProtoCorgi so far and I kinda love it - I mean, you're a corgi, barking or shooting lasers at various enemies in space, what's not to love?
    I've already played most of the other games before and wanted to own them on Steam, except for Ultrakill (and I'm really looking forward to that one).

    Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of June 30th
  • Persona 3 Reload - I'm not sure whether I like it or not just yet tbh. I'm about 20 hours in (or 2 months of "in-game time") and the plot is very slow to unravel.
    I don't like turn-based RPGs usually, so combat is a bit of a chore and the exploration of Tartarus is very samey. Social sim aspects have been fine, but I guess I expected a bit more interactivity? I'm not sure. Its been nice to learn more about side characters, albeit ones not present in the "core" team.
    The only somewhat similar game I've played before is Fire Emblem: Three Houses and I absolutely loved it, but I was much more interested in the gameplay (T-RPGs are 100% up my alley) and social sim was okay as well.
    I think my primary issue with P3R is the setting - which I didn't think would matter so much - I really don't relate to high school life / issues anymore and it's making it hard for me to get into the game...
    The OST is absolutely S-tier though (and it has made exploring Tartarus much more bearable!)

  • Ditto. tbh after hearing Ben Starr in the first few seconds of the trailer, I was hooked, but the style and gameplay showcased definitely impressed me even more.

  • Absolutely! You could sort of "cheese" your way into climbing some parts of the world of Zero Dawn, but Forbidden West's climbing is much improved - to the point that I've been getting sidetracked a number of times already just exploring and getting to great vistas.

    Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of June 2nd
  • I finally started Horizon: Forbidden West - gameplay changes compared to HZD keep trickling in and I couldn't be happier. I love Aloy's character so I'm really happy to be in her shoes again.

    This past week was pretty disappointing before that:

    • Hellblade II was good, but nowhere near as impactful as the first one for me. I'm left with a sour taste overall, although I'll admit they did a tremendous job with cinematography and character rendering.
    • Stellar Blade was insipid. Whatever could save it in my book - its gameplay - turns out stale pretty quickly, so I ended up abandoning the game midway. The story and characters were really uninteresting imo, couple that with how EVE is represented... I couldn't really find any redeeming qualities.

    Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of May 26th
  • I finished DMC 5 SE sometime last week (or the "primary" arc at least) and it was fun as heck.
    I moved on to Stellar Blade, combat is very fun/engaging, but story is utter sh*t (so comparisons with NieR were definitely unwarranted IMO, seeing as it's pretty much the opposite of my experience with Automata).

    As far as this weekend goes, I am playing Hellblade II, which was probably my most anticipated game of the year. I am loving it so far!

    What are some eras of gaming that you've stopped feeling nostalgic for?
  • Most handhelds tbh.
    I didn't really grow up with "traditional" (home) consoles, but I always had handhelds (and a PC).
    I have trouble going back to most handheld games pre-Vita nowadays, even if I remember the PSP (and GBA to a certain extent) fondly, between the controls, smaller screen and cut versions of games vs their home console counterparts, it's hard to go back. Emulation makes it somewhat nicer for me, but still.
    And let's not begin with GB or GG games, they have a certain charm, but I usually can't stand them for more than 5 mins nowadays.

    Shoot em ups & run n' guns
  • Shmups, I'm only a beginner but I have a few suggestions:

    • ESP Ra.De. - somewhat slower bullet hell with pretty interesting scoring, the "Psi" re-release has a lot of useful QoL features.
    • Espgaluda II - you could think of it as a successor to the former, it has refined gameplay and recent releases have great QoL features. Somewhat faster paced bullet hell?
    • Ikaruga / Radiant Silvergun - Although these are two very different games, they have entirely different mechanisms to most other shmups. Ikaruga feels like a "puzzle" game a lot of the time, while Radiant Silvergun has some light RPG elements. Both are somewhat hard to get into imo.
    • Dodonpachi Resurrection - great starting point re bullet hells, the recent re-release offers a ton of QoL features and the game itself has interesting scoring / gameplay. Soundtrack is awesome.
    • Raiden IV - Super biased, but I love the soundstrack. Pretty great, if simple, game otherwise.

    I have many more shmups in my backlog (Ketsui, Dodonpachi Daioujou, Battle Garegga, Rolling Gunner, etc) which I'm sure I could recommend, but seeing as I haven't played them first hand yet... I'll leave it there for now.

  • Just finished Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty, which I enjoyed greatly, despite all the jank!

    I'll likely move on to DMC 5 now, since I left it unfinished a few years ago and would like a shorter / fast-pace game atm.

    I've also been playing a fair amount of Guilty Gear Strive on the side, first real fighting game and it's a blast so far trying to learn the right combos, cancels, etc...

  • Maybe? You would need to know rooting a TV is even a possibility in the first place, I had no idea that was the case and I've had my LG TV for over 4 years.
    I'm just pointing out some specifics of the prerequisites, which the article did a pretty bad job of highlighting imo, and how this is not the miraculous solution it's somewhat touted to be.

  • Not to be a Debby Downer, but you'd either need a LG TV which is already rooted, or one you can root (per the repo's README, "RootMyTV is unlikely to work on firmware released since mid-2022" and given firmware downgrades are impossible...).
    AFAIK firmware updates are opt-out by default, so as long as you connect your LG TV to internet, you're likely to have received one, but I could be wrong.

    The aspect ratio looks extremely cinematic, assuming that's what they'll keep in the final game (a la The Order: 1886). May 21 can't come any sooner!

    Hey, I thought I'd share some sort of a review of the Pulse Elite, now that I've had it for a week - I'm honestly really happy with the headset for the most part!

    Background: I'm not an audiophile. I've had a Sony WH-1000XM3 as my sole headset for 4+ years (but it recently gave up on me, so I was looking for a replacement). I also briefly tried the Audeze Maxwell last year, and although sound quality was spectacular, comfort was abysmal, so I ended up getting rid of it.

    Pros:

    • Sound quality - obviously a step-down from the Maxwell, but otherwise nothing to complain about. Imaging is especially great.
    • Comfort - entirely subjective, but as someone with (relatively) thick-framed glasses (~3mm temples), comfort is a non-issue. I can wear it for hours at a time without any fatigue or pressure. It might get a bit warm, if that's a concern for you.
    • Sound isolation - No ANC, which I was used to, but passive isolation is good.
    • Multi-device use - I've been able to use it on PS5, Switch, PC via the PS Link adapter with no issues whatsoever (I've actually been using it mostly on Switch this past week) and mobile/tablet via Bluetooth (simultaneously). No hiccups or disconnections, latency is on-point with the adapter. As long as you have a 3.5mm TRRS cable, you can use it with any other device.
    • Mic - Noise cancellation is incredible and sound quality is completely fine. I've used it for work and some gaming sessions, without any complaints.

    Cons:

    • Design - entirely subjective again, but my partner jokingly mentioned I looked like Lord Farquaad with it on and that's pretty much on point, haha. I find the headset pretty ugly tbh.
    • Build quality concerns - it feels pretty flimsy and I have some concerns with long-term durability. More importantly, the fact that earpads are glued on is a huge drawback repairability-wise (that's what failed first on my WH-1000XM3s and I was glad to replace those instead of the whole headset...). UPDATE: the earpads are removable, so that's great news.
    • Potential firmware issues? - there's a slight, but very noticeable, high-pitch noise whenever the headset is connected but idle, which could be a firmware issue. I've seen other reports of that issue, so it's not isolated to my headset.

    As I said in the beginning, I'm overall really happy with the headset, especially given its pricepoint of $150 USD / $200 CAD, but I'm not entirely convinced or sure I'll keep it because of my concerns around build quality and repairability issues in the future.

    I've been waiting for reviews to drop on the Pulse Elite and I'm glad to see it is as well received as I'd hoped!

    I splurged on the Audeze Maxwell sometime last year and although the sound was stellar, the comfort was not, so I ultimately had to return them. This headset seems to be a great (much cheaper) alternative with better comfort, so I'm likely going to get it day one.

    Anyone else interested in the Pulse Elite?

    I've decided to start tackling my PSVR2 backlog and I played a few hours of Moss yesterday. While the game is fun and perfectly adequate to get my "VR legs" going, I've noticed that regardless of how I tweak the focal distance, height of the headset, the IPD or if I even tilt the headset slightly, it doesn't really help with removing the outer peripheral "blurriness" of the image, if that makes sense. The centre is pretty much clear, but anything on the outer edge isn't - fwiw, eye tracking is working without a hitch.

    Is there some "secret adjustment" I'm just unaware of? I should mention I've got prescription lenses from Hons VR, but those are not too bulky and allow roughly the same adjustment than without (and are definitely easier to adjust with than with glasses).

    I'm usually not one to splurge for collector's editions of games, let alone controllers, and I never bought any console covers, but I couldn't pass up on the FF XVI limited edition controller / covers (at a very close to MSRP price). Needless to say I'm super happy with my purchases, haha :)

    I really hope we'll see more limited edition console covers in the future (provided they don't all get scalped in a matter of minutes...).

    Interesting review IMO, with colour accuracy comparison and benchmarks of DeckHD vs. original screen (and other "known good" screens).

    I would be more tempted by an OLED screen upgrade, but colour accuracy looks pretty good tbh. Pricing is in line with an official (matte) screen replacement from ifixit - $99 USD.
