Steam Deck
These are lists of some tools and software that are useful for Steam Deck and can enhance your experience with it, as well as all the websites and other such Steam Deck resources I know.
I made these lists for the wiki on Reddit's SteamDeck sub and I thought it was a pretty useful to keep around. I wanted to dump them here for everybody to preserve them and to maybe find a new home for this Steam Deck resource.
Let me know what you think.
List of tools and homebrew
Below is a list of tools and homebrew that can enhance your experience with the Steam Deck. Since the Steam Deck offers most things that a normal Linux desktop environment can, tools are included that can be found in the Discover store (including from non-default repositories) and have proven to be an especially good fit.
Emulation and non-steam games
-
BCML (a modding tool voor Breath of the Wild for WiiU) can be difficult to get running on Steam Deck, because it uses an immutable filesystem and the version of Python installed by default is higher than what BCML supports. This script helps people install it.
-
Add non-steam games to your steam library.
-
This script automates downloading, installing and setting up a large list of different emulators.
-
A graphical and themeable emulator front-end that allows you to access all your favorite games in one place, which is installed by Emudeck and Retrodeck, but can also be used by itself.
-
Mod Organizer 2 Linux Installer
This project aims to make modding and playing Bethesda games on Linux as easy as possible. It does that by providing installers which automatically setup a working experience for the user.
-
A flatpak application containing a large list of different emulators.
-
A tool that automatically applies assets from SteamGridDB directly to your Steam library, removing the need to download and set them manually.
-

It supports both games using Proton and native Linux games, and works on both X11 and Wayland.

-

-
Chiaki4deck is a fork of Chiaki, adding features for the Steam Deck. It is a free and Open Source Client for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 Remote Play. It can be used to play in real time on a PlayStation as long as there is a network connection.

- • 100%www.gamingonlinux.com Microsoft Windows kernel changes don't suddenly mean big things for Linux gaming
There's a lot of blog posts and news articles being written right now centred around Microsoft's plans for updates to Windows 11, and potential kernel changes, with some thinking this means big things for Linux gaming.
This is a counterpoint to this article posted here a few days ago.
Issues with kernel anti-cheat are the biggest barrier to linux gaming being able to play everything, so it's easy to get overly excited about changes to how windows implements it hoping for an improvement. However that last article was probably unrealistically positive about the changes, and this article probably has a much more realistic perspective on what the changes will actually mean.

Random Crashes
Is it kinda just common for games to crash to "desktop" on Deck? Had mine about 2 weeks, no matter if it's big, small, or dolphin emulated, games will randomly crash on me, and the Deck restarts itself.
If there's any known general settings that can stop the crashing, that'd be great.
- www.tomshardware.com AMD plans for FSR4 to be fully AI-based — designed to improve quality and maximize power efficiency
The team in charge has already been working on this for 9–12 months.
He specifically cited bad battery life on the ROG Ally and Lenovo Go, saying that getting only one hour of battery life isn't enough. The Steam Deck (especially the OLED model) does a lot better battery wise, but improving power efficiency should really help with any games that are maxing out the Deck's power.
I've had multiple occurrences of this lately with programs installed as flatpaks, such as Audacity (audio editor). The updates section might list
3.6.0 --> 3.5.4̀
for a program.Whenever this happens I usually manually exclude any version downgrades and only upgrade the rest.
¿Can this happen due to security issues? ¿Or because the higher version has become incompatible with something else on my system?

A fresh small Steam Beta was released, and for those of you on Steam Deck who play non-Steam games and emulators it's going to be a useful one.
Is there any reason why I shouldn't buy FO4 goty from GOG instead of steam? You can still customize controls perfectly fine and all the mods/expansions still work? It won't play any differently to a steam bought game except it will be in non-steam games?
I know games usually work fine, but I haven't bought a new game from GOG since I got my steamdeck, so I'm nervous.

- • 100%www.gamingonlinux.com DOOM + DOOM II enhanced versions get Steam Deck Verified
Now that the upgraded enhanced releases of DOOM and DOOM II from Nightdive Studios and id Software are available, Valve have given it a fresh test to get it Steam Deck Verified.
Is it possible to add GOG games to the steam library then add them to your deck? Do i need to load gog somehow tomuse them?
My friend and I want to play modded Minecraft together. We used to use Hamachi when we both had windows machines. Now Hamachi just isn't working. We can connect and communicate on the LAN we made, but I can't connect to the direct connection. There aren't any error messages that help. It just says it couldn't connect. I have a steamdeck and my friend has a Windows desktop. I've done research about it and I am thoroughly lost on what to do. We want to try to do this for free or hella cheap.
Has anyone here encountered this issue and found a workaround or anything?

- steamdeckhq.com SteamOS 3.6.12 Beta Starts Of Moving 3.6 To Stable - Steam Deck HQ
The next SteamOS beta was released today with some nice fixes, and it also marks the start of SteamOS 3.6 coming to the stable branch!
It's a simple adapter USB-C male to female, in an angle, making the cable go behind the Deck, so it doesn't wiggle on top.
My laptop is old enough to vote, and therefore anything beyond Stardew Valley made it collapse, but it works great for my daily tasks. However, after trying a Switch recently (I consider the Lite to be the perfect handheld, size wise), I got an itch that could only be scratched with more games.
I found a second hand Deck for a reasonable price and I CAN'T BELIEVE I WAS MISSING SO MANY THINGS.
Particularly I've been amazed by No Man's Sky, because I can see other players!!!! And visit them!!!!!! I can't do that on Switch!
I'm also enjoying Witcher 3 and Rimworld!
Discovering that the SD can be used as a computer too, with all the bells and whistles has been very fun.
My one and greatest complaint is its size... I get that it's necessary to add such a big amount of buttons, but my fingers are getting a full workout trying to remain in position.
Still, amazing, amazing machine!!
(Y'all can feel my enthusiasm levels by counting the amount of "!" In this text)

- • 96%www.gamingonlinux.com SteamFork is yet another Linux distribution aiming to be a SteamOS-like for handhelds
Attack of the clones! Well, sort of anyway. We have Bazzite, ChimeraOS, HoloISO and now SteamFork as well. There's so much choice to get Linux on your handhelds.
This is different from Bazzite and some of the other SteamOS similar operating systems by being as close to vanilla SteamOS as possible.
According to the devs:
> It's a SteamOS based distribution that is intended to be as close to 1:1 compatible with upstream SteamOS as possible while making changes to support a wider range of hardware. It originated as a fork of HoloISO but it has been majorly overhauled to eliminate things like post-copy operations (as much as possible), introduce our own signed package repositories, add an automated release process, and provide many bug fixes and refinements. The focus has largely been on handheld gaming consoles, but it's in use on a variety of AMD based mini PCs as well.

- steamdeckhq.com Gamescom Showed Me That Devs Really Care About Steam Deck Compatibility - Steam Deck HQ
Gamescom has been amazing so far, but the really amazing part has been seeing just how many developers and publishers care about the Steam Deck.
Over the last week or so, I went to Gamescom to represent SteamDeckHQ, and it was a blast. I got to see so many awesome games and talk to many developers and publishers, and the majority of them were either very receptive, optimistic, or have already started implementing Steam Deck support!
In our article, we go over some examples, as well as me being known as "The Steam Deck Guy." Though one I am happy to share is that the upcoming Epic Mickey Rebrushed will have full Steam Deck support at launch, and playing it on the Deck at Gamescom was phenomenal.
There's much more we go into detail with in the article, but in the end, it's looking very optimistic for Steam Deck support for future games.

- www.gamingonlinux.com EmuDeck team announce Linux-powered EmuDeck Machines
The team behind EmuDeck, a project that started off to provide easy emulation on Steam Deck / SteamOS have announced their own hardware with the Bazzite Linux powered EmuDeck Machines.
This is debatable if it belongs here, but since these will be running Bazzite they're basically emulation focused Steam Machines. I think these have enough overlap with the Deck to be worth discussing here.
For those who don't know:
-
Emudeck provides a series of tools to make setting up emulation on the Steam Deck easy. Includes installing emulators, setting up control schemes, installing CRT shaders, and adding emulated titles to Steam so that you can run them like native steam games.
-
Bazzite is a SteamOS alternative. Biggest difference is that it's based on Fedora linux instead of Arch linux. Otherwise it provides a similar experience to SteamOS, with a steam based game mode, decky extension support, and many other similarities. It's main advantages are that it works on non-Deck hardware, supports permanently installing non-flatpak linux software, and lets you use different linux desktops besides KDE.
-
It seems like Steam is having issue, at the moment, if you can't login or are stuck in a loading screen, don't panic, I'm sure eveything will be back to normal soon!
If you're having issue, don't hesitate to comment here too.

- • 94%www.gamingonlinux.com Black Myth: Wukong shows very clearly Valve are selling a lot of Steam Decks
Valve don't exactly like to give out sales numbers, so we often have to make educated guesses but sometimes with huge hits like Black Myth: Wukong, it gives us a slightly clearer idea on how the Steam Deck is actually selling.
A particularly fun bit:
> So then, how about Fortnite on Linux / Steam Deck? Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said when it hits "tens of millions of users" that it "would actually make sense to support it". We must be pretty close by now right? Why ignore a platform that's sold multiple millions, and is clearly just continuing to fly off the shelves?
