Is it inadvisable to use an m.2 NVME drive as a storage location for video editing render cache?
  • SLC drives have around 100,000 write cycles. Most consumer SSDs are QLC now and those have less than 1,000 write cycles. They also tend to write slower than a mechanical hard drive when the write cache gets full. Some of those drives can be modified to run in pseudo SLC mode. That trades capacity for speed and write endurance.

  • Even my smoke alarms use 915MHz to link together. The documentation doesn't say what frequency is used. You have to look up the FCC ID online to find that out. They are constantly transmitting to each other and start making a racket if anything interferes with them.

On .LAN domains, how to stop firefox switching to https (when it's not available) and stop complaining about self-signed certificates when it is available ?
  • You can get rid of the certificate errors by adding your CA to Firefox. Just make sure you keep the private key secure.

Set browser.fixup.fallback-to-https to false to stop Firefox from trying https if http doesn't work.

  • There is an awful lot of license free equipment on 915MHz, a lot of which is run by people who know nothing about radio. Good luck getting all of it off the air.

    As it should be
  • If you want rechargeable batteries, just put some eneloop batteries (or some of the cheaper, rebranded ones) in the remote. They are not like the old NiMH batteries, they hold a charge for a years.

I certainly don't want a remote that I have to throw out in a few years because the non-replaceable lithium battery wore out.

    Paid SSL vs Letsencrypt
  • If you are just self hosting for your own use, just stick with letsencrypt or self signed certificates.

The paid certificates are for businesses where the users need to trust the certificate. They usually come with warranties and identity verification, which is important if you are accepting payments through your website, but it's just a waste of money for personal use.

Music industry’s 1990s hard drives, like all HDDs, are dying
  • The music can be copied to new hard drives without any loss in quality, so why are they leaving their only copy on 30 year old hard drives?

  • My GOG games run great on wine, it just takes a bit more work to install them. Wine has better support for early windows games than windows does now.

  • If they use a good, 12X bluray drive, it will be quicker to install from a disk than to download it unless you're lucky enough to have a good fiber internet connection. Even then, the servers you download from will often be overloaded and slow on release day.

  • Get a bluetooth audio transmitter dongle. Most of them support two pairs of headphones. That's also the only way to get APT-X LL support for low latency audio.

  • I picked this little scope up from the Seapac swap meet a week and a half ago for $3. It turns out that all it needed was some contact cleaner to get it working again.

This is a portable scope that can run from 12V DC as well as an internal battery. I don't have the battery for it, but I could probably put some 18650's in there if I disable the built in charger.
