Teenage Afghan girls say they feel "mentally dead" as the Taliban's ban on their education prevents them from returning to school once again
  • After WWII the Hungarians were pretty much stuck in the eastern block as human shields against a NATO attack against the USSR. So they were not provided with much rebuilding as the West did for other countries. They picked up pencil and paper and are now known as a country that produces mathematical and scientific geniuses. e.g. Paul Erdős Erdős published around 1,500 mathematical papers during his lifetime, a figure that remains unsurpassed

My Point, for ding-dongs: Afghans , Palestinians or any poor country should encourage math skills because the raw infrastructure is pencil and paper + a mind. Most minds can do math if they try.

'We are essentially in a new Gilded Age’: As workers get laid off, CEOs and shareholders gobble up hundreds of billions in profits
  • and you aren't buying parts of their companies to share the wealth. sad. you can even get partial shares w/o commissions now.

When you buy a share of equity in a corporation that means you own m/nth of the company where n is the number of stock share issued, m is the shares of stock you own. Nothing is stopping you from being a shareholder except you wanna buy those fancy things. Read "The millionaire next door". We drive 10 y.o.Toyotas, shop at wal-mart, cut our own hair, and buy parts of businesses. You don't?

  • Why I say confirmed our launch is there have been at least one close call on each side. One I remember the details of one was the USSR Officer in charge, Stanislav Petrov, over-rode the information from the radar and 40 years ago, on 26 September 1983, he saved from potential nuclear disaster.

When discussing this with some peers the consensus was that the would have to sound the alarm. Especially now, since it is unlikely a first strike would take out all cities [count on Russian duds], so the survivors would blame the bunker buddies (the higher people, ala Dr Strangelove)

There are certain things whose number is unknown. If we count them by threes, we have two left over; by fives, we have three left over; and by sevens, two are left over. How many things are there?

Did automobiles replacing horses, diminishing horse population, diminishing horse suffering -- as a consequence of work forced upon the animals. Is that moral win for horses; less suffering? Although their population is vastly smaller than 130 years ago.
