#PhotoOfTheDay is cool geological stratification on display out the windshield of my Land Cruiser, Titus Canyon, Death Valley National Park.

#PhotoOfTheDay is another from Fleet Week over San Francisco Bay, back in 2011 I think. We had great "seats" from the top of Mt. Caroline Livermore, the highest point of Angel Island.

#PhotoOfTheDay is another of Yosemite Valley, with Liberty Cap and Nevada Fall at the center. 😍

#PhotoOfTheDay in which I offer to place a flower behind the ear of a pretty lady, however the flower is nearly as big as her head! It also had the thickest petals I had ever seen, they were like a

#PhotoOfTheDay is of a flock of strange birds, passing by Angel Island in San Francisco Bay. Photo taken from the island peak during Fleet Week back in 2011 I think.

#PhotoOfTheDay is of the moon and the ISS, taken with a handheld iPhone(!) with the default camera app, from Kauai!

  • @pmonks@sfba.social Hahaha! Just no. 😁 I remember coming to the end of a long dirt road on the coast and a battered old Porsche 914 was absolutely crawling along in the opposite direction... I gave the driver a thumbs-up.

#PhotoOfTheDay is a fun section of the little-known 4x4 trail that leads into Yosemite Valley. This trail can be sketchy (it was missing a big chunk along a steep drop-off that I had to squeak past)

#PhotoOfTheDay is the large cheese aging room, Oakdale Cheese & Specialties, California. A family business, they've been making their cheese - mostly gouda - for four generations. We like to stop in

  • @mlanger@mastodon.world I recall one time coming in from the East side over Tioga in my old Jeep and coasting down down down the whole way to the valley. Best mileage that Jeep ever got! 😂

  • @mlanger@mastodon.world Crowds can certainly be an issue. I don't like them either... I forget what the exact number is, but something like 95% of visitors to Yosemite never get much past the valley. The Wawona area is also beautiful, for example. Also visiting in the off season helps. And on that particular visit we took the relatively unknown 4x4 route into the valley, which neatly bypasses most all the road traffic.

  • @df4or@radiosocial.de I can understand that... I was just happy I could treat the family to the experience. It was a surprise for them, as we'd taken the mostly-unknown 4x4 off-road route into the valley and they were expecting the usual tent camping! 😁

  • @df4or@radiosocial.de I can't decide if she was thinking of things she would rather you spend the money on, or if she was just being sensible. :)

#PhotoOfTheDay is of the dining room at the Ahwahnee in Yosemite National Park. A gorgeous place to eat and the food is good too, as you would expect.

  • @Pilferjinx@lemmy.world Thanks! I haven't been very active lately but started a few years back... Tips, um... There's a lot to learn and investment in $, and set up. Taking in-person lessons if you can will help a ton with those things. Even informally. Start small, learn and obey the safety. There's very little rocket science involved but there is a lot of material to learn, so be patient and it will come.

  • @galaxia@lemmy.zip There are great opportunities for re-use/re-cycle/etc. in life. I've made use of some in props/cosplay stuff before. It's usually easier when you're creating something from scratch, rather than trying to duplicate an existing screen-used item for example. That's been my experience, anyway... Like ages ago I made up a scifi hand grenade and it was mostly constructed from a broken, modified toy. :)

  • @AF0AJ@mastodon.radio No worries! The dark spots are what the whole thing looked like until I did the grinding and polish. The surface is slightly uneven from being beaten into shape with a hammer, so the low areas (dark spots) get missed during grinding... I could have ground it down until they vanished, but I don't like it when my work looks like it was made by a machine. Most of my stuff is much more "rustic" than this example!

  • @galaxia@lemmy.zip Definitely not all of them, but many. Giving a piece of trash a new life is weirdly satisfying.... One of my regular things is making old railroad spikes into heavy-duty bottle openers.

#PhotoOfTheDay is something different - one of my tidier blacksmithing creations, a table knife that started off as a piece of a very rusty spring or something, that I found on the side of a road.

#PhotoOfThe Day is of Half Dome, etc. in Yosemite Valley, Yosemite NP. My absolute favorite place on Earth. And no this isn't AI or computer-generated or whatever, it truly is this magnificent!

#PhotoOfTheDay is the glassblower guy at the Northern California Renaissance Faire a few years back. We go most years and it's always good to see the regulars.

#PhotoOfTheDay for a change of pace is this excellent 1960s style display room at a now-closed antique shop in Sacramento, CA. I miss this place. Austin powers would have loved this room! :) Not shown
