  • Same, and also with experience in the construction business, so my first thought was that 220k per door for apartments is quite reasonable. I wouldn't fret about it at all, because in the grand scheme of things this is chump change. Just say you're getting into real estate investing with a business partner.

China to raise retirement age for first time in decades as demographic crisis looms
  • I broadly agree with you and like you also tend to criticize the CCP from the left. If you want to be communist, be communist and do it right (for the first time!).

However, it's far too late for China to do those things before GenX enters retirement, even if there were any political will to attempt it. China is (after the USA) the most grindingly capitalist place I've ever been to, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Within the parameters of their current politics, they are absolutely heading at full speed for an economic cliff, even if Xi succeeds in killing off most of that male surplus on Taiwanese beaches. Taking Taiwan, however doomed and reckless the attempt may be, is perhaps the only hope of stemming that flow, since TW has much higher per capita GDP. I'm guessing that's why he's so intent on it.

  • they either bought the (I think flawed) economic theory that this is needed

You're putting me in the difficult situation of backing up the CCP on this one, but how could it not be needed? They kneecapped birthrates for a whole generation, and never recovered. Unless they fix birthrates or start allowing immigration, they have no other recourse than forcing people to work longer. Either that or they actually start acting communist and redistribute wealth so that the soon-to-be retiree generations can weather the storm.

Edit: also, look at that male surplus. Ouch.

    > Sorry if this kind of question isn't allowed here, but I'm at my wit's end. VB randomly started launching on startup about 2 weeks ago (on EndeavourOS) and I can't figure out why. There's no shortcut in ~/config/autostart, it isn't in the KDE startup apps list, and I can't find anything virtualbox-related with systemctl either. There's also no setting in the VB app itself. WTF?

Based on recommendations in that thread, I also checked:

    /etc/systemd/system /etc/default/ vboxautostart.service KDE "restore session" settings

    Any ideas are much appreciated!

In unsurprising news, Reddit prepares IPO

www.businessinsider.com Reddit's cofounder said that at first the company felt like 'a homework assignment that got out of hand' rather than a business

Reddit's cofounder Steve Huffman said in its early days he filled up most of the site with content using different accounts until it got more users.

    > Now the social media platform is aiming for an IPO in the first quarter of 2024 with a valuation of $15 billion, and has been in talks with potential investors like Goldman Sachs and and Morgan Stanley, per Bloomberg.

This was recorded in Cleveland for a radio broadcast; the tape became available as a bootleg and is known as one of the most important ones in the band's history.

It's the first-ever recording of "Fly by Night" and only their third performance with Neil. We can hear snippets of what would later become "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" in the Working Man solo.

A quote from Geddy regarding bootlegs:

    >A lot of people say 'It takes away from record sales' but [...] the fact is that any fan who buys a bootleg is still going to buy your record. So, who is it harming?

Sorry if this community isn't the right place to ask — I got a USB webcam that works great in Teams, but lags tremendously (3-4 seconds) in Zoom. I doubt the Zoom app is introducing that lag on its own, but how would I troubleshoot this?

RESOLVED: it was caused by the app being flatpak. use Flatseal!

I have a network drive mounted to my computer (PopOS). I have read & write access to everything in the drive and can drag and drop files between two Nautilus windows, but if I try to drag a file from the network drive into an email for example, I get a popup about file permissions. Is it because flatpak apps don't inherit my user permissions?

I've been using Linux on and off for about 15 years, but was never able to make the leap to using it full-time until PopOS. It's been painless to use and does everything I need with only minor tweaks. Thank you System76! I can't wait until the Cosmic DE is released.

(too bad about the name, though...)

(apologies in advance if this isn't the right community for this question)

I've been flirting with Linux on and off for about 15 years and I think I'm ready to make the switch mostly full-time. I use a laptop for work and have a Microsoft 365 plan with email and such. I need to replace that with something Linux-friendly and would much prefer something that works with a desktop email client. Easy syncing of email, contacts and calendar to Android is a must.

Proton seems like it might be a good option but the privacy features aren't a huge selling point for me so I'm open to other options!
