Organic Maps Turns 4 Years: The Privacy-Focused Alternative to Google Maps
  • This is honestly the only thing I use gmaps for too. I feel like organic and other map apps are useful, but there are very few others for looking up restaurant/business info with the ease of gmaps

  • I found that citymapper is a great stand-in for transit. Great with bike and public transit info, plus ads can be blocked with DNS so you get full functionality! Basically dropped transit once I started using it

TCL TVs will use films made with generative AI to push targeted ads
  • I have a TCL running Google TV that I use Flauncher on - a nice little FOSS lightweight launcher that I like a lot. However, I am only able to switch inputs (for gaming etc.) when using the default launcher. Anyone found a way around this? Pretty sure its a Google/TCL hardware thing and not due to any alt launcher just not wanting to include that

The Google Pixel 7 and other older Pixels will now get two extra years of updates | TechRadar
  • Previously, these phones were only promised three years of operating system updates, along with five years of security updates, the latter of which isn’t changing.

Seems like this adds roughly two years of OS updates but keeps the five years of security updates in place. For those of us on GrapheneOS I think we are reliant on the security updates so won't be affected, but still overall good news!

  • EDIT: Just thanking everyone for the thoughtful responses. Really enjoyed reading everyone's takes here and will definitely think on things moving forward and try various configurations out!

Hi all, interested in your thoughts here. Recently signed up for Proton Unlimited via Black Friday sale mainly for email/VPN/drive. For passwords I've been happy with Bitwarden and DDG for email forwarding (plus you get a duck.com address which is just fun).

If you were me would you move over to ProtonPass to streamline, or keep these things broken up? On one hand I don't want all my eggs in one basket, on the other hand I feel like it means I am trusting my info to one Swiss-based org vs Proton + DDG/Bitwarden which are US based. Plus if I am paying for a service I feel a little less like the product in the long term.

Feel pretty ok with both options as my main objective is de-Googling, but interested to hear what has worked well for others. Appreciate any input!

Elon Musk now publicly bullying a specific federal worker, siccing huge hoards to make her life miserable: "These tactics are aimed at sowing terror and fear at federal employees"
  • Perfect that the thing they are attacking her for is not even what she does. Just proves complying in advance is worthless, as Musk and his lackeys will attack for what they perceive to be true regardless of reality.

What are some controversial privacy topics?
  • Bought a second hand Pixel 7 in like new condition at the time for $250 on back market (dropped it, bought another, still cheaper than the equivalent iPhone 14 lol). That at least means I am not financially contributing to Google, but I do agree that I don't think there is a way to verify that the hardware is completely foolproof even if its the best option we currently have.

I guess that's true of any hardware though, and we have to make our assumptions based off known quantities such as Pixels' unique hardware security features?

But yeah, it's a minefield out there. Let's get carrier pigeons.

Remembering the Corrupted Blood incident: That time WoW was overrun by a virtual plague now referenced by Covid-19 researchers
  • Nothing clever to say except that this is fascinating and it would be cool to see mmorpg-like environments for other studies of virality, social phenomena etc. Anyone know of anything else like this?

Google must sell Chrome to end search monopoly, justice department argues in court filing
  • Good news, but does someone more knowleagable of these things know the likelihood of a Trump DOJ derailing this? I am hopefully as the original case was brought in 2017 under Trump, and his relationship with Big Tech is at best strained, but I truly don't know what to expect moving forward.
