This is why the UN required them to stop using kids, which they agreed to in 2022...

  • Unfortunately, all of that goes against what they agreed to do in 2022:

    https://www.hrw.org/news/2024/02/13/yemen-houthis-recruit-more-child-soldiers-october-7

"In 2022, the Houthis signed an action plan with the UN to end grave violations against children, including the recruitment and use of children in their forces, and committed to releasing all children from their forces within six months.

Tawfik al-Hamidi, the president of SAM, told Human Rights Watch that the Houthis use their government institutions in their efforts to recruit children, including the Ministries of Education, Interior, and Defense. “All of them are working together and coordinate to mobilize children and recruit them,” he said.

Another activist, who works as a human rights researcher, said that “[recruitment] activities in schools have increased massively [since October 7], including through the school scouts. They take students from schools to their culture centers where they lecture children about the Jihad and send them to military camps and front lines.”

By leveraging official institutions, including schools, the Houthis have managed to take advantage of a far broader swathe of children. The UN secretary-general has also reported on the Houthis’ use of educational facilities for military purposes."

  • I think you guys are on two different tracks.

When @Keeponstalin@lemmy.world references "the genocide", I don't think they're talking about the ongoing Israeli genocide, they're talking about the OTHER genocide, the one in Yemen, which directly involves the Houthi.

    https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/14623528.2024.2346405#abstract

It all gets muddled because the Houthis also make attacks in the Red Sea so it all kind of conflates together.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sea_crisis

But Squid is right in that child soldiers aren't volunteers, they don't have the capacity of volunteering. They're conscripted, often on dire threats against them and their families.

The Israeli genocide really does have nothing to do with it. The Yemeni genocide definitely does.

Nebraska’s high court says people with felony records can register to vote in a decision with implications for the upcoming election.

www.newsweek.com Armed Militia "hunting FEMA" causes hurricane responders to evacuate—report

Federal emergency workers were told to evacuate Rutherford County, North Carolina, on October 12 over safety concern.

That is not true, because while FEMA administers the Shelter and Services Program, funding for it comes from a separate pot of money funded by Congress for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Other false claims that have circulated include that people taking federal relief money could see their land seized or that that $750 is the most they will ever get to rebuild. FEMA has pushed back against the false claims and conspiracy theories, setting up a page on its website to combat misinformation and rumors."

    Recipe from America's Test Kitchen:

2 cups (8 oz) whole wheat flour 1 cup (4.25 oz.) unbleached all purpose flour 1 cup of wheat bran 1/4 cup wheat germ 2 teaspoons of sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon table salt 2 cups of buttermilk

375° middle rack, 40-45 minutes, rotate 1/2 way through. 185° internal temp. Cool for 1 hr.

I found, on initial mix, the dough was far, far, too dry. It kept crumbling apart and WOULD NOT hold together.

I kept adding splashes of buttermilk until I could get a loaf that would hang together.

Baking time had to go a little longer too, after 45 minutes it was only 145°. Maybe because of the added buttermilk. Running another 15 minutes brought it up to temp.

www.opb.org Measure 118 promises Oregonians more money, but it could come at a cost

The complex proposal to hike business taxes and divide the proceeds among residents is the most divisive measure on the Oregon ballot.

Been seeing a lot of anti-118 ads lately, specifically talking about the harms to "small business" so I had to look it up myself:

    FTA above:

"Measure 118 would slap a 3% tax on a business’s Oregon sales above $25 million, then divvy up the money raised among Oregon’s more than 4 million residents, no matter their age.

An analysis by state revenue officials suggests the policy would reap more than $6.5 billion a year, even though it raises taxes on fewer than 2% of businesses. The measure could then send around $1,600 a year to every Oregonian beginning in 2026 — either via tax credits or direct payments."

So, first, if your business generates more than $25 million in sales ($68,493.15 every day!) - you are NOT a "small business".

2nd, we definitely need reform on business taxes to make sure businesses are paying their fair share.

3rd, I'm not so sure $1,600 direct payments to Oregonians is the best use of those tax dollars. It should be used to reduce our overall tax burden. Maybe increase the standard deduction by $1,600 or some such.

"For months, Netanyahu and his government have consistently ignored American counsel as to how to prosecute the war in Gaza against Hamas after the Oct. 7 terror attacks. Biden and his aides were repeatedly frustrated by Israel’s widening war aims within Gaza — with a devastating impact on Palestinian civilians — even at the cost of a deal to free the remaining hostages.

Biden deemed Israel’s response “over the top” and did stop one shipment of American arms to Israel. But even as pressure grew from fellow Democrats to create distance from Netanyahu, Biden’s reflexive instinct was to support Israel despite the swelling humanitarian crisis. As his influence over Netanyahu shrunk, the president’s anger grew. Phone calls between the two men were increasingly turned into shouting matches, according to one of the officials and one other senior official not authorized to discuss private conversations. Biden told confidants that he did not believe his Israeli counterpart wanted a cease-fire deal, arguing that Netanyahu was trying to perpetuate the conflict to save his political future and assist Trump in November’s election, the officials said."
