  • Iirc, it was an energy/environment focus, so it was all about analyzing and comparing different energy sources wrt their usefulness, feasability, environmental impact, etc. This was in Houston, so the oil industry plays a huge role in the local economy, and funds the university endowments.

But yeah, the whole thing was pretty farcical.

  • Not that I recall. I didn't know anyone else in the class, and I don't remember anything coming up in the class group chat. I did get quite heated with him at a couple of points, but I'm pretty sure he still gave me an A.

  • I took an environmental science class in college, and the professor was a former president of Shell. As part of the curriculum, we had to read his book, Why we Hate the Oil Companies. Predictably, it's a corporate non-apologia, which—hilariously—completely avoids engaging with why we actually hate the oil companies.

  • The way I heard this joke as a kid was,

"How do you fit an elephant in a Safeway* bag?"

    "I dunno, how?"

"You take the 'S' out of Safe, and the 'f' out of way!"

Then you would hope they actually arrived at the punchline, but you'd often have to prompt them a bit.

*Safeway is a regional American supermarket chain

  • Looks like it's Majid with one "j". Found this page; which seems to show the character OP mentioned, Lieutenant Maryam. Can't find when she was first featured—wikipedia just says she was added later.

  • That's a great movie! I haven't really started showing my daughter (9) scary movies yet. I was terrified of spiders for like a decade after seeing Arachnophobia as a kid, and those Scary Stories books gave me nightmares for years, so I'm reluctant to expose her to media that might trigger something like that for her. Tough to know when it's the right time—or at least, that's been my experience.

  • I dunno. I upvoted it, because it's a really spot-on parody of the kind of comments a lot of people were making last fall. At the time, though, I was more or less in that camp. Not because I actually wanted Biden, but because it seemed like we were stuck with him as the nominee, and Trump was the only alternative.
