RAID or Backup? What do you think would be more appropeate for my use case?
  • Ok so of course the best solution is both raid and offsite backups. After that the question is how much do you want to prioritize convenience vs not losing you data at all costs. For irreplaceable data that you care deeply about not losing make an offsite backup it's not worth the risk, never rely on raid to keep your data safe it may not always work. For data that is replaceable and you don't really want to lose temporary access to in the event of a drive failure then raid is fine it most likely won't fail.

If you are making a backup please make it offsite if you can it just provides one massive extra layer of security that makes it much harder for any permanent data loss to occur. It doesn't have to be in a NAS it can just be a hard drive by itself in a friend or relatives house, Whenever you come over and visit update the drive for any changes. One downside to this method is pretty obvious, in the event of your drive at home failing the data that you have backed up will be as old as the last time you backed it up, so if you are constantly creating new data that you can't risk losing then this won't work. And this goes without saying you should really have all of your data encrypted but especially your offsite backups I wouldn't trust anyone with my data.

A good compromise and probably what I would do is use raid all your files and then use your 2tb hard drive to backup all of your really important data that you don't want to lose. With this setup it's possible to lose some data in the event that your raid setup doesn't work for whatever reason or your house burns down but at least all of your important data is completely safe.

What is a habit/thing/technique that most people would benefit from, in your experience/observation? What are some habits that would be best avoided too?
  • Does it really matter why you aren't drinking? I tend to avoid asking questions like that especially immediately after I find out that is the case. No matter what reason someone has it won't (or at least it shouldn't) change there choice if I know.

PayPal Honey steals affiliate links and lies about finding the best coupons
  • Yeah I deleted honey a while ago just because it was owned by PayPal and it probably sells all your data. Just one extra reason to add to the pile.

The idea of honey is good though any possibilities of an open source version?

What issue in society do you think is near impossible to fix?
  • I don't really agree anything is impossible to fix. Maybe I'm optimistic but I think with enough time things can get better. As far as I know alcohol is much less common among younger people and there are more people avoiding it entirely now. Or maybe by impossible you meant really difficult.

  • Make a list of all the tasks you want to do for the day, every day. This is so important for me if I don't do this I just never get anything done.

Also always plan to do something productive every day even if you just feel like relaxing. You will feel so much better relaxing if you know you've done something your proud of.

  • Yeah alcohol really sucks. It's so embedded into society most people expect you to start drinking regularly as soon as you can. I think it's getting better but still people are nowhere near as cautious about alcohol as they really should be it accounts for 10% of deaths worldwide, that is just mind boggling.

What opinions about the tech industry do you feel comfortable expressing here, but not in public/at work?
  • This is why I love lemmy so much. The only people here are people who have realised that mainstream social media is a steaming pile of trash and came hear to find a nice community.

  • Engineers aren't the only people who should want to learn and look stuff up right? Everyone should want to learn. And tiktok is just not the way to do it at all. I think it's wild how many people "learn" from platforms like tiktok and tell it to others like it's a fact without doing any extra research.

  • For the first time I am actually switching my main PC from Windows to Linux.

Problem: When booting into Fedora there was no display output, I changed it to safe graphics to install everything and that fixed it but after the install finished I tried turning it back off and there was still no display output

What I have already tried: I've tried installing drivers and everything I could find although that shouldn't be the problem since I have an AMD 6700xt and Fedora comes with AMD drivers built in. I also tried Installing Linux Mint thinking maybe the distro was the problem but it came up with the same issue.

And if anyone suggests it no there is no way I am going to daily drive on safe graphics.

Edit: I am dual booting on a single 500gb ssd with windows already installed on the other half of the drive, not sure if that would be the problem. Also a similar problem was happening on windows if I left the screen in login for too long without signing in the display would show no signal and it wouldn't wake up if I moved my mouse or clicked or pressed any keys.
