  • I bloomed my soap!

    πŸ†˜πŸ†˜πŸ†˜πŸ†˜ Alert the Friedberg!

  • I have consumer-grade kitchen ustensils, and I doubt that even with fat, I will get much above 300 degrees (assuming I don't set fire)

  • I willdefinitely give it a try, but I'm wondering if reaching out to the head of River Razors is the best option πŸ€”

  • As to heating up, what temps are we talking about as to not interfere with the tempering?

  • I also generally prefer the Kai's, but I had this one in the shavette, so I'm using it 🀷

I used the kamisori shavette today – no slippage. The shave with the shavette is quicker, but less close. Also, this blade starts tugging, so I may get rid of it soon.

@gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social: I screwed up and responded to myself, rather than to you, but here are the photos. I don't know if you see anything.

At this time I'm wondering whether putting the lower part of the kamisori blade into a (padded) vice might be able to straighten the thing back?

    Anyways, have a good evening!

  • Here we go:

Still difficult to see, but on the first, the toe clearly doesn't touch the stone. There is some space between the center and the store on the second.

  • I will get to it after work. Thanks for looking at it!

  • I suckin taking photos, but this illustrates the problem:

Before, this was 100% symmetrical. There are no chips in the blade.

  • Thanks! I broke a mug this morning, too - not my day 😭

It has finally happened: my clumsiness manifested during the shave, and I dropped a straight into the sink. The kamisori is symmetrical no more, and upon inspection and stropping, the whole blade is warped to one side, more at the toe than at the heel, and the toe bites into the stropping leather. Positive side: I didn't try to catch it, and no one was hurt.

I will certainly need to rehone this before using it again, but I'm not sure that it will ever be the same. Shit happens! (But maybe that's a sign that I should go back to DEs and GEMs.)

    Have a good day!

A quick shave, knocking down 3 days of growth. I binned the blade, if it was a straight, it would have needed another hone.

    Have a good night!

It probably wasn't your fault 🀣

Edit: I notice thet smart people here use synths - next time maybe

Time for BVWSC again, this time courtesy of @gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social! Like @djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social, both the soap and the artisan are new to me. The soap was expertly sealed, and was black, as advertised. To stay on theme, I also chose a razor with black scales.

Upon opening it, I mainly got an impression of smoke. They say:

The combination of cypress, vetiver, frankincense and musk appears fresh and dark at the same time. He [sic!] has something dry and earthy about it.

The probably machine-generated translation did not use a recent LLM, I assume

I found the scent very discrete, and had trouble identifying any of these (maybe because my nose is not as functional as usual these days in the cold season?). I also found the soap rather finicky to lather: I had to use about double the dose I thought initially I would need, and still slightly overshot the optimal dose of water, resulting in a rather runny, and not very protective lather (yes, I cut myself in the neck, you guessed correctly).

The experience of @djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social was markedly different, so probably I should try this again with filtered water and a synthetic nod (I have very hard water, which plays not too well with other artisans as well, e.g., AYLM). I reserve judgment for the moment, and will try again – the smush is big enough for a second shave.

    Have a good day!
