  • My company initiated a hiring freeze last November, just after my group lost 3 team members. Then in February they did layoffs, my group was not effected. The hiring freeze is now lifted, but what we were never told is that when they did the layoffs, they also “erased” any positions that were open prior to the layoffs, including the positions that were open in my group before the hiring freeze the previous November. So those jobs are just gone, and the slack that my group has picked up? That’s just the new normal now. It’s bullshit.

    The Chad English Gammon:
  • Having known a few Aussies, I have never heard them leave out “that”. It fits in though with some of the other oddities in dialect they have.

What's a good alternative to Gmail?
  • It is free and comes with 5GB of cloud storage. For $1 a month, you get 50GB of cloud, a personal domain, Private relay (basically built in VPN), and email relay (masks your email address when signing up for a site, site never gets your actual email address, apple receive an email at the masked address and forwards to you.)

    I'm a "Rule-Follower". Am I a champ or a chump?
  • You’re a champ. As someone who’s broken plenty of laws and gotten away with it with no consequences, all minor things albeit, following the law is generally a good thing to do. Someone else here mentioned not being so rigid about it, I also agree with that. But in general, it’s a good thing to be a textbook good citizen.

  • I only notice how bulky and heavy the deck is when I use my switch. But I love the deck and don’t mind the heft considering what it’s capable of.

Only Composite Kids Will Get It
  • It is kinda funny that they mixed up Stevie wonder with another Blind musician. Quite a blunder to mix them up though, Stevie has such a distinctive look.

    Thinking about getting a donkey
  • Will you at least take the donkey on your trip to rescue Fiona? In my experience, donkeys make great traveling companions, and can be quite humorous!

Linux overtakes macOS users on Steam thanks to Steam Deck
  • This is awesome. As someone that games on all 3 platforms, I’m happy to see that Linux usage has gone up so rapidly, even if it is only because of the steamdeck. It’s a great way to introduce people to the wonders of Linux! And yes I do game on my MacBook. The sims lol, it is actually nice to have SOMETHING to play when I feel like not working. And a surprising # of my favorite games work on Mac wonderfully like cities skylines and the 2 point games and many more. I’m always happy when any platform other than windows can play games as collectively these smaller platforms need to dethrone windows, in my opinion.

    shitpost.
  • It is quite common in my experience to use “getting a check” as a figure of speech. Similarly I’ll say “I get my check every Wednesday” but I have direct deposit. And I’m not even old lol

Mastercard demands US cannabis shops stop accepting debit cards
  • I agree on a level, but interstate commerce laws mean that these institutions are held by federal regulation to not accept these payments. As others here have said, the real issue is marijuana needs to just be legalized on the fed level. Then this wouldn’t be an issue.

What book would you recommend to explain to someone what you do for a living?
  • The US Federal code of regulations. Im a US customs broker. At 50 titles and sometimes 100s of pages per title if not thousands, it’d be quite the read in one go!

Edit: I just checked, it changes pretty regularly, usually stands somewhere around 90 thousand pages. The specific code on customs brokers is title 19 part 111. But really the whole thing is specific to my job in one way or another. I’ve never actually read the entire thing personally as it’s practically impossible. I look up whatever I need to as needed.

Who is the most famous person you've ever met?
  • DMX. I was working at a cell phone store in Western New York in 2016 and he had just gotten out of prison and wanted to get a new phone for his daughter. He had quite the eccentric entourage with him! He was actually quite nice and took pictures with everyone in the store and had some convos with people. I have a picture with him where I look like an idiot lol.
