Is Mac Mini suitable for self-hosted server?
  • I’m no lab scientist but when I switched from a hackintosh to an M1 Mac mini a few years ago, my total electricity consumption went down by around 15-20%. This can mean a lot on the long run if you’re tight on budget.

Is Mac Mini suitable for self-hosted server?
  • What’s great about Mac minis is that they’re extremely power efficient since they’re ARM machines, so if you live somewhere like in Europe where power is expensive, it can save you a lot of money. They’re usually completely silent too.

Depending on their needs, I’d suggest OP to get a used M1 Mac mini, they’re great value for money.

    Let's Uninstall Chrome but...
  • Yup, I totally agree. I’ve been in this situation a few times where I just asked a question because I wanted to know people’s opinion about something privacy or FOSS related, and got downvoted.

I have an IRL friend who went back to Reddit in large parts because of stuff like this. It’s pretty bad.

And I say all this as an open source developer

  • Welcome to Lemmy where having an opinion even slightly different from the open source/Linux fanboys grants you downvotes to oblivion, no questions asked 🙃

    Please stop making Alien movies
  • Haven’t seen the film yet but I was agreeing with them until the very last part.

There’s some great arguments against these Disney soft reboots that tell the same story as the original films, but throwing all the previous sequels under the same bus as Romulus seems nonsensical to me.

What's one brand whose products you can always trust?
  • I’m mainly talking about Drive and Pass. I don’t really remember as it’s been a while since I’ve tested them, but the situation doesn’t seem to have changed. Here’s a good thread for Drive. I remember Pass having problems with auto-fill which made it unusable for me.

I have Proton Unlimited but only use two of their services because of this, it’s pretty frustrating.

  • I love Proton’s mission just like all Lemmy users but I wouldn’t say you can trust them in terms of quality. Apart from Proton Mail and Proton VPN, most of their other products unfortunately have a deep lack of features.

Borderlands 3 Surges In Popularity After Movie Bombs At Box Office
  • The gameplay is really well done I think. As much as I love 2, the way you move in 3 makes 2 feel old and kinda slow. As long as you play solo it’s really fun, it’s the story that’s utter garbage but everything else is good.

We need to support Linux Phones development more now than ever based on recent news
  • Meanwhile, you’ve been able to use ad blockers on Safari for iOS for years and years. Once the EU forces Apple to let developers publish actual other browsers on the App Store (and not just reskinned Safari), iOS should be pretty great in terms of browsing liberty & comfort.

Bungie CEO faces backlash after announcing 220 employees, or 17% of its workforce, will be laid off | Pete Parsons has spent $2.4 million on classic cars since Sony acquired Destiny developer Bungie
  • Yeah! I like this idea. Not sure how feasible it is but I’d sure like to see some billionaire at least try it.

Main problem with this I think is who would get to drive them? Because they need to be driven at least a little to keep their shape and to make sense. Not all people could drive them because they need to be driven carefully, which most people can’t do (brand new track day cars are famously beaten up even after a few years, not exactly the same context but something to keep in mind).

  • Hi! I have a USB hub I've been using for a few months. I have an M1 MacBook and it was plugged to it through a USB A to A cable and a USB A to C adapter, which worked perfectly.

I've been wanting to get rid of the adapter so I got a nice USB A to C cable instead (which can transfer data). The cable works perfectly with all the devices I've tried it with (hard drives, phones...) but won't work with the hub, and I have no idea why. I tried a bunch of other USB A to C cables and they won't work either. It only works when there's a USB A to A cable involved.

Here's a before and after of the setup if it helps: https://imgur.com/a/xUYt1Td

Tried to contact the hub's support but they won't reply. Any idea what could be going on?
