Burning Up
  • As a lifelong celcius user I have a very intuitive sense of how 23 degrees celcius feels. I have no intuitive sense of how 50 degrees Fahrenheit feels.

If you're used to a system then it's intuitive.

Unnatural disasters are not an act of god, change my mind
  • Yes. And also the explanation for why they're worsening is not exclusively because of fossil fuels/climate change. That is a factor, but others include terrible forestry practices (including, somewhat paradoxically, fire mitigation and fighting).

Not trying to let oil and gas companies off the hook. It's just an issue that has a lot of shared blame between different industries.

Unearthed photo: Teen JD Vance poses with 3 girls at urinals
  • That's a good point. It's just kinda funny because my reaction to it is basically "wow. maybe he actually used to be a real human."

I think probably this just illustrates that he's not genuine. That said I like your reflection that past behaviour should not be used as evidence against who a person is currently. That's probably a good baseline, even if the past evidence could actually be viewed in a positive light.

Anyways. Thanks for the thoughtful exchange.

Unearthed photo: Teen JD Vance poses with 3 girls at urinals
  • I basically agree with you, but the subtext is a little different.

I don't think this photo is damning in any way. It looks like some kids having fun in a pretty typical way. It's pretty normal for kids to "joke," and play around with gender. But this dude had some fun as a teen and now he's trying his damnedest to ensure no one ever gets to express themselves in a way that is incongruous with their agab. It's worth pointing out that that's shitty for some specific reasons.

  • So before I knew shit about the fediverse I was trying to find and instance and I thought "oh neat I'm a leftist," and created an account on hexbear. I was not prepared at all for that. I didn't know what a tankie was and I was just legit confused for a minute.

  • So now we're buying the article of clothing, the branding on said clothing and precision tools to remove the branding from the article of clothing.

Not throwing shade at you specifically. That's a clever solution, I just kinda hate that this problem demands even more shit in order to get around.

  • It is however a classic trope. Being "one of the good ones," affords certain privileges until is doesn't. It is also absolutely a despicable card to play.

It has now been 15 years since the federal minimum wage rose to $7.25
  • Say that's true. Do you then actually believe that if you're not smart or you "don't have drive," you somehow deserve to be unhoused or starve, to be unable to access healthcare?

I'm all for people improving their lives, but as a baseline I just don't believe that certain people deserve the consequences of horrible poverty just because they didn't or couldn't perform academically.

Also what's the justification for having a system that allows employers to exploit workers by paying poverty wages while materially benefiting from that labor?

We are wasting up to 20% of our time on computer problems, says study
  • I mean, that's fine, but as a Linux user I've fucked around a lot and spent a lot of time fixing mistakes that I did not need to make.

I think I'm a pretty average Linux user. Who needs something that "just works" when you can break it by trying to add something you don't need?

You can fit two cars there
  • I've used huge trucks for bush work. Like we're talking going mudding just to get to work. This line of work basically put me in the position that is the subject of commercials that try to convince suburban dads that they need a huge truck in case one day their family goes on a fictional camping trip to the middle of a swamp.

Anyways, you know what I learned? These fucking things suck at off-roading.

    • They have shit visibility. You sometimes need to get out of the truck to see around corners, especially if you're cresting steep hills
    • They have a dangerously high center of gravity (I saw a bunch of coworkers roll theirs) that is only amplified if you carry large loads in their truck beds
    • Over-complicated features like traction control will actually kill your power if you're doing some technical driving, which will make you get stuck when you don't need to

There's no good reason for these pieces of shit to exist.
