‘Reddit can survive without search’: company reportedly threatens to block Google
  • This would be a huge blow. I use Google a ton to find relevant content on Reddit. It's still a useful way to find helpful comments even after the mass exodus and deleting of old comments. This seems like it would be much more harmful.

What are your favorite news sources?
  • Morning Brew. Their daily emails give me just the right amount of news. Most of the major stories in a concise format. I usually hate emails so I was skeptical when setting this up, but I do like it

How is it even possible/practical to obey traffic laws?
  • You’re right, you could. I never have been ticketed or in an accident. It’d be better if everyone followed the speed limit, but since that doesn’t happen I try to take the safest approach possible given the situation.

How is it even possible/practical to obey traffic laws?
  • I’d go with the flow even if they are going over. Drivers going at different speeds can lead to dangerous situations so I try to avoid that most of all. If there’s little traffic then I’d go about the speed limit.

  • Getting a speeding ticket while going 3 miles over the speed limit sucks so I can see why you’re upset.

I’ve never had a problem just going with the flow of traffic. Sometimes almost everyone is going over the speed limit. I go with that. I’ve lived in Minnesota most of my life. I’m more comfortable than most driving in snow and ice. Sometimes in snowy conditions the flow of traffic seems slower than necessary. Yet, again, I just go with the traffic flow and end up driving a bit slower than I would otherwise. If there’s little to no traffic I just go the speed limit. If someone wants in my lane I let them in whenever possible.

What would you recommend as a first Apple Watch?
  • This is what I’m leaning towards. I can see the argument for a SE but I feel like Always On display is potentially a big deal for me so I’d like to have it as an option even if I end up disabling it. There doesn’t seem to be enough difference between Series 7 vs Series 8 for me to need the Series 8. A used Series 7 I think is a happy medium for me.

  • Always On display is the only feature that seems meaningful to me in comparing the SE vs Series 8. I definitely can't justify a $200 cost difference for that alone for a new watch. A used/refurbished Series 8 might make sense if I decide I need that.

  • It seems like a new SE is probably the way to go then. I looked at the Series 8 a bit and it looked like the main difference for me would be the Always On display but maybe I don’t need that.

  • I have an iPhone, iPad and AirPods but I’ve never used an Apple Watch. My main uses at least at first would be to monitor heart rate when exercising and record lifting routines at the gym via Strong app. I use my iPhone at the gym now and find it a hassle to take in and out of my pocket to record reps. I’ve been looking at used Series 4 and later or possibly a new SE. I think I’ve read Series 4 and later will have similar heart rate tracking. I think I would like the Always On display which I don’t think the SE has.

Any recommendations for my scenario? I also ideally want it to last at least a few years

  • They’re losing subscribers and money so I guess it’s not surprising. I’m down to zero streaming services after cutting back this year. The last couple subscriptions I’ve gotten I immediately cancelled and binge watched for the month my subscription lasted. There was no need to extend the subscription after that. Most services you can exhaust the content in a month or two of heavy use.

    Thinking about getting a donkey
  • i don’t have experience with donkeys, however I grew up on a farm with mostly cattle, but we also had pigs, sheep, horses, chickens, etc on occasion. I wouldn’t recommend leaving any farm animal on its own if it can be avoided. Especially if you’re going to be gone for days on end. Get 2 donkeys if you can, or another animal companion for it, and make sure there is someone who can check in once or twice a day when you’re gone

How can my wife and I make new friends?
  • Anything where you’re meeting the same people on repeat occasions. It’s pretty rare to form a friendship after only meeting people one or a couple of times. Friendships are often formed gradually. It’s easier growing up because it’s structured into so many things. You see the same people in classes, sports, clubs, etc. Friendships will form naturally in those settings. Try to find something to replicate that. It could be volunteer work, a workshop to learn something new, joining a community that shares a hobby. The key is bumping into the same people over and over

Mastodon Usage Soaring as Twitter Rebranding Leads to User Exodus: CEO Eugen Rochko
  • What was Musk's logic? Was there any? It's like he ruined the reputation of Twitter and decided to try a restart under a new name but it's predictably failing.
