Justice Department accuses Visa of debit network monopoly that impacts price of 'nearly everything’
  • What are you referencing specifically? I work in payments and I've never heard of this IBM code. The card networks just use an ISO format and every front end is different (the two we have are completely different in very fundamental ways though they are definitely both old as fuck).

California's 'click to cancel' subscription bill is signed into law
  • I assure you they won't. It's not going to be that expensive to only show an option if you're in California. Companies already do this with other things like privacy related stuff.

If the company is already a scumbag company that makes it impossible to cancel, this will only stop them where they have to follow a law.

The $700 PS5 Pro doesn’t come with a disc drive
  • If you wait for a good sale, digital is sometimes cheap or cheaper. I just go with whatever is cheapest at any given moment.

Tumblr to move its half a billion blogs to WordPress
  • Kind of the old Windows vs Mac problem though. It gets so many exploits because it is so ridiculously popular. No one is going to bother looking for exploits in shit that no one uses right? I'm sure they've got problems like any project but I'm not convinced they're THAT bad. Not to mention a lot of exploits you see are plugins doing dumb shit, not WP itself.

What makes a great burger for you? On the contrary, what can ruin it?
  • Nah it's not that hard to make a decent burger from frozen. I don't know WTF people are doing to mess that up. You just put it on the grill and don't overcook it lol.

Not all ai is bad, just most of it
  • Yeah I've been using it to help my novice ass code stuff for my website and it's been incredible. There's some stuff I thought yeah I'm probably never gonna get around to this that I rocketed through in an AFTERNOON. That's what I want AI for. Not shitty customer service.

Nova Launcher, savior of cruft-filled Android phones, is on life support
  • Thank you. I've been thinking the same thing. People keep posting things that aren't remotely close to Nova. I'm beginning to think there's just nothing else at their level. Lawnchair seems like the closest so far but it's still not customizable enough and the Google feed implementation randomly broke and I couldn't get it to work again (amongst other annoyances and performance issues).

Senators unveil bipartisan deal on stock trading ban
  • I dunno maybe they should be subject to more stringent rules like people at banks and such? If you can just trade your stocks right before you pass a law, what's the point of the new rule? That's part of why they're under fire in the first place isn't it? They have insider information. Saying you can't trade after the fact seems like it's too late to me. Maybe I didn't explain that well idk.

Senators unveil bipartisan deal on stock trading ban
  • AFTER BEING SIGNED INTO LAW seems like a huge loophole to me. They can just trade while they're talking about it or right after it passes but hasn't been signed, etc etc.

    Linux Server OSes?
  • Depends on the type of server too. My media server is arch (aur is godsend with all the weird little tools I'm running) but you'd have to be out of your fucking mind to use it for a web server.

Web server is usually Ubuntu server/Debian with virtualmin.

The Distribution of Users’ Computer Skills: Worse Than You Think (2016)
  • Yeah this is very much not that they don't understand there's a better way. It's that they don't care to look up how. It's pretty common. People just go oh I don't know computers and you get whatever random crap they could throw together with zero effort lol.

How much maintenance do you find your self-hosting involves?
  • I opted weekly so I could store longer time periods. If I want to go a month back I just need 4 instead of 30. At least that was the main Idea. I've definitely realized I fucked something up weeks ago without noticing before lol.

Stuck on Let's Encrypt certificate issuance due to firewall issue even after opening necessary ports
  • This is the answer. Pretty much every ISP blocks 80 They say it is because worms use it blah blah but it is exactly what you think. They don't want you running a web server. You're probably going to have to do the DNS challenge instead.
