  • What do you mean by “bleed potential”?

Bleed is that moment where your in-game emotion starts to mix with your IRL emotional system. A non RPG example would be crying while reading a book/wathcing a movie. The same can happen in RPG where you're feeling angry, sad, happy because your character feels so. It's something that some RPG player (Mostly narrative games and nordic LARP) players look for.

The word actually comes from nordic larp but is also commonly used in tabletop https://nordiclarp.org/wiki/Bleed

  • That's a tricky question, but let's try-it

    1. A D20, level based, high fantasy game, so let's say D&D/Pathfinder or one of the many clones
    2. A prompt based, narrative immersive game with a lot of bleed potential let's say Alice is missing
    3. A horror games, I would say Call of Chtulhu because it's the classic one, but also to show player a percent-based skill mechanic
    4. Iron-sworn in GM-less mode, as it ticks both the narrative consequence driven game (PBTA) and the GM-less box
    5. A sci-fi game, in order to get a recent design, and a sample of dice pool I would say Coriolis

Only 5 games is actually quite restrictive, especially to show different game type and mechanics. I am a bit annoyed that I didn't found any slot for Vampire/World-of-Darkness (considering how popular is the franchise) and that Iron sworn is the only PBTA (especially considering it's not the classical PBTA) I would also love to add a Cyberpunk game (Shadowrun or Red) as it's also a popular franchise, extend the D&D clones with OSR, and add Blade in the Dark considering it's massive influence on the recent RPG scene

  • This is the complicated part with water consumption, saving water in the Netherlands won't make rain in Morroco.

However, there is only so many rain water stored in the ground at a given time and brought by the rivers. This water need to be used mostly for agriculture, then human consumption, and finally industry. Once it's back in the cloud we don't fully know where it will fall again, let alone if it's polluted.

Sure it's a renewable ressource, the problem start when you the water faster than the rate at which it renews, especially during summer. In Europe the problem will be even worse with the global warming. The alpine glacier are disappearing meaning that we'll loose a major water reserve for summer

  • guess if you've played one variation you at least get a bit of taste of the mechanics

The thing is that there is more than just the rules, I feel like a Shadowrun or DnD player, the kind who enjoy crunch and gear will find Eclipse phase system quite OK, while a COC player will struggle with it (despite the base being almost the same, a percent roll under a skill). A bit like heavy metal and Flamenco heavily relies on guitar but are very different.

However, the more rpg you played the easiest they're to get, with 4-5 questions, you know enough to pay a session without fooling stupid

  • Depending on how you define family of systems while there is a finite way on how to roll the dice but at least for the main one, you miss

    • Dice pools with D10 (World of Darkness), D6 (Shadèwrun, Star Wars)
    • Skill (Chtulhu, Basic RPG)
    • Diceless
    • Playing cards (Deadland, castle falkenstein)

Then there is hundreds if not thousands of combination of these option making every game unique, so hard to make a count or a list

  • But really I'm not sure I agree much with the article. I could be wrong but it seems to me that the audience is growing

I would tend to agree with you, feel like the article ignore 50 years of RPG evolution and still focus on D&D which despite a large market share, is a tiny drop of what the market has to offer and a very specific playstyle which again isn't really a good example of what RPG look like, at the point many player do not play DnD as intended and end up tweaking it to do political/horror/investigations game

  • You should check out Blades in dark and similar (Scum & Villany, Bands of blades). While it's not the same definition of 5th gen as the author (VTT integration isn't the point) it's modern RPG design, with a lot of thing to ease the GM life. And IMO the right balance between rule light and crunchy (it's definitely too crunchy/complex to be called rule light, but run quick and smooth) main features would be.

Everything has hit point aka clock, no matter whether we talk about opening a door, seducing a Noble or killing the dragon, the GM gives a target number and it's up to player to stack enough succesr to do-it. Of course fail roll would have narrative consequences

A downtime phase which is more than spend XP and heal, with a whole mechanic to manage faction to faction game.

A stress meta currency, which helps you a lot, until you don't have it anymore and start to struggle

Flashback and define equipment on the fly are things letting player jumping to action quickly without a long planning phase

IMO we're full into modern RPG design and used existing concepts to build a fast paced great game easy to play and GM while still having a lot of rules/options

  • @aihorde@lemmy.dbzer0.com draw for me At the top is written “Average D&D Party:” A stern warrior clad in iron armor, with a billowing red cape and a red cloth tied around his waist. His hands rest on the handle of a very wide sword, the tip of which stands on the ground in front of him. He is labeled “Warrior on a just and noble quest to defeat an existential threat to the world that they live in.” A girl with messy, blonde hair, and a bronze chestplate sewn directly onto her sleeveless shirt. She has a white ribbon tying a small messy ponytail at the back top of her hair, and is wearing tall boots with bronze arcs attached to the top of the foot parts. She is carrying a large bronze hammer, and a large bronze shield with a very upset-looking face engraved on it. She herself has an innocent expression. She is labeled “Idiot”. A woman clad in purple with a long-sleeved shirt with symmetrical holes on the arms and torso. She has pointed ears, like an elf, and is wearing gold earings and two gold necklaces. She also wears a dress that looks somewhat like a lamp cover with a spider-web pattern on it, and has a strap that wraps around her shoulder. She wears a placid, pretty expression, but behind her in low opacity is her face distorted with mischief and hate. She is labeled “Manipulator”. A small mage dressed in green with yellow details, and with a long, frilly mage hat featuring a poofy yellow flower on the forehead area. She also wears an equally frilly green cloak held together by a star shaped button, and golds a lightning bolt shaped spellcasting staff. She has an innocent expression, but sharp teeth and two side-ponytails peaking out from beneath her hat. She is labeled “Other, Smaller Idiot”.

  • It's crazy how much right wing became able to influence kids, and making nazi cool again. Because of course if a teen worries that your parent may be evicted or a young adult can't find a job, it's the fault of immigrants and feminist, not at all because of capitalism

  • That's a tricky question,

While I'd love to say no my character aren't related to me, and I try to change character type in reality things are more blurry. A different person playing the same character would play it quite differently, or may-be simply not finding that character cool. And there is some pattern in my character, I tend to play more anti-hero dragged into the adventure against their will or Techie/super-hacker profile, over some other archetype.

  • It's actively transforming global agriculture. While the USA failed to innovate Canada has integrated blockchain into it's agricultural sector to facilitate unparalleled traceability.

This example is a nice summary of the issue with block chain. Sure it can be done with block chain.

However, is it really doing it better than SAP or whatever large corporate program used to do it? Is there an ecosystem of thousands of specialised consultant that will tailor a solution for your need? Most managers tends to be conservative with tech, they want a brand they know (Microsoft, SAP) wich can provide a support contract and be sued, and with sales-person wearing a tie. The cryptobros and theirs block chain based startup do not match.
