Normally the reason this makes sense is - if the leading party that supports your side isn't supporting it enough, going to the other side punishes your party. It's an attempt to pressure your party into adopting a better position. And normally it works even if the other side's position is even worse, since your party would listen and work to get the votes back in the next election. So under normal circumstances, this is a fair play.
What's tough here is that there might not be another chance if Harris doesn't win this election since Democracy itself is at stake. So these aren't normal circumstances.
