It can psychologically reinforce negative behavior and have you get complicit with your surroundings and make positive change harder. But that's true for all coping.

If masturbation was a negative thing, we likely wouldn't have been inclined to do it. As far as I know, that unearned dopamine rush thing being bad is a bit of a myth.
