(I might suggest that making good alt-texts on Lemmy may be another good example. Yes, I transcribed that whole screenshot into the alt-text by clicky-clacking.)
you gain nothing by returning the shopping cart.
That's totally not true; you encourage the continual framework of a civilized society, which should benefit you in the long run as an uncivilized, every-person-for-themself environment is generally much harder to deal with overall.
It is hardly a litmus test, which by definition is pivotal, sure, but has nothing to do with the level of sacrifice attached.
I know it's a tongue-in-cheek 4chan image, but I just felt like going serious on this anyway. I feel like a real litmus test is seeing someone in need and choosing to help them or not.
The shopping cart gremlins will kill you. You don’t know about them because they leave no survivors.
Yes, every single time and fuck people who don't
Even though you have to go through all that effort of easily pulling the lever?
Not true. I gain 1 €, 50 ¢, or at least a nice plastic token.
This is why people need an imaginary sky daddy to tell them to return the cart.
Based on life experience, the magic sky daddy people are the ones more likely to not return the cart, there's no punishment for not doing so.
Dear god,
Sorry I was a jerk. Thanks for letting me say sorry and instantly be forgiven by something that doesn't exist.
It's not a sin, so there's really no reason not to leave them in the middle of a parking space. Plus it creates more work for those lazy store workers who are always getting in my way while I'm shopping. /s
Those who refuse to return the cart should be reclaimed for biomass.
Pick up speed, hop on and skate that mf to the cart storage. Personal gain unlocked.
For me the gain is a dopamine release in knowing I made someone else's job just a little bit easier.
Same feeling when you put back the weights at the gym. I can‘t stand people who just litter the plates all around on the floor.
I put the cart away cause it's fun to get a running start and then hopping on and riding it across the parking lot
Man it sucks to be huge. I used to love doing that. Especially doing it from the front of the cart and doing some sick drifts.
What you need is some decently sized children to put in the cart to act as a counterweight (kids love that shit too; some of my happiest memories as a kid is being allowed to sit in the cart as my mom was shopping, and having her pile up the groceries on top of me until I'm just a head poking out. If she knew how happy that made me, I reckon she would have done it more often.
Must be nice to be skinny!
I pushed carts at a retail store in highschool. I always appreciated when people returned their carts.. not so much for my convenience, but out of respect for people's cars. I've definitely seen a few slam into cars after people just leave them wherever.
Elderly folks or people with mobility issues I totally get. You're cool, do what you need to do. But the lazy entitled ones drive me nuts.
If everyone who was able to put the carts back, it would make a significant difference. In my country, the disabled parking is often adjacent to a pedestrian walkway that cuts through the car park. People often leave the carts in this walkway, which means that it's quite often that I'm unable to park because all the disabled parking spaces have a trolley that's drifted into them
Saw a guy leave his cart right on the divider. Grabbed his to put away, while putting away my own, and made eye contact with him the whole time.
The shame was just dripping out of him. It was wonderful.
ALDI solved this with the carts that take a coin. If someone doesn't want to return it, and leaves it in the parking lot, someone else will return it to get the coin.
Somebody inevitably always mentions this in shopping cart social theory threads.
You must understand, the discussion is not actually about how to solve the issue of shopping carts being returned. The treatment of shopping carts is being used as an illustration of a concept.
I happened to see this the other day at ALDI. I promptly grabbed it and left it in the corral with the quarter when I was done shopping to pass along to someone else though.
You just need a small bread knife to pop the coin back out.
Who's going to bring a bread knife with them to Aldi though? Just bring it back or give it to someone on their way in if you're that lazy (I've totally done that more than once).
Or just use said small bread knife to stab people who neglect to return their cart.
No, because I don't have a cart. I cycled to the shop and everything we need for the week fits in a basket.
I have a fat backpack that will carry all the groceries I will need for a week. I'll use the cart to putter about the store, but once all the groceries are in the backpack at the register, I'm walking to the car sans cart.
I don't have a car, so if I can't carry it myself I'm not getting it.. There is no cart.
Depends, there’s this place I go to where I have to circle around all the cars to bring it to the front of the supermarket. They could put a corral somewhere back there but they don’t because they would lose some parking space. I never return the cart in this store.
I just like to ride the cart through the parkinglot and try to aim the cart into the cart corral and jump off last second. I made it into a game, im sure people look at me funny.
Either be a human leech or return the cart.
It's not a hard choice.
You gain a world where people don't see you do shitty things and then get ideas.
It's dumb to say that good things that help everybody are nothing, in part because it's a lie.
I'll do you one further, do you take a cart from the corral on the way in if you know you need a cart?
i prop the wheels up so it doesn’t roll or take up any parking spaces, and leave it out there because i’ve actually worked at places like that and going outside for something is the best part of the shift….
if it’s raining or 80 degrees then i’ll put it in the cart corral….
the whole “it’s soooo rude and evil to not save money for corporations” is made up by: corporations
In case someone wants to watch some cart narcs, here's one with a lazy bones.
I don't usually return it to the front of the store. But no matter where I'm parked in the lot, it never goes to a far-away corral, either the closest corral to the storefront, or better. I try to help out just a little.
I put it in the corral always but sometimes I flip it over too. I want them to believe I returned the cart so hard it flipped over.
Chaotic Good perspective:
If it's a nice day out, I put the cart as far away from the store as possible, like waaaaay out in left field. It gives the poor kid pushing carts more time away from the watchful eye of management and more time outside instead of stuck in a cold grocery store with repeating music.
Source: I was that poor kid and loved it when I had to spend more time away from my supervisor.
I do.
For me it's all about how many carts there are. One or two yeah sure but if there are like dozens then im not cleaning up. Maybe the right ethical answer is emergent not inherit.
I used to buy this argument too, then I had kids. If you're just a person at the store alone and buy groceries, I completely agree that you should put the cart where it belongs. But I can't leave my toddler buckled into her seat in the car while I walk away and put the cart up, and I can't leave my kid standing there while I unload the groceries into the trunk. This is a small thing, but it's literally one of a thousand reasons someone might not be able to put the cart in the cart corral. But the awesome thing is, if it's easy for you to do, you can just stop assigning ill intent to the people who can't do it and take care of it for them.
I've taken my toddler to the corral in the cart, then carried them back to the car. Just one kiddo though, two would probably be untenable!
I don't understand; can you not put them in the car and close all of its doors for the approximately ≤30 seconds that you cart-push?
Of course they can. They can also just leave the kid in the cart. Presumably the child was sitting there throughout the shopping experience. No reason they can't remain seated until they need to leave. Or the little shit can just walk with them to the cart return. But if they did any of that it wouldn't allow them to create this hypothetical problem that allows them to be a shitty person.
No, of course you can't. If it's right next to the car or one space away, sure, but you can't lock your kids in the car and walk away, dude.
There’s an entire subset of the population that didn’t want to wash their hands during the pandemic, the bar is much lower than this.
If you ever go for a shit in a men's public toilet, especially in a pub, you get to be lucky enough to hear multiple people not washing their hands after a piss.
I was in a bathroom recently, and a guy used a urinal, then the hand-drier, then left.
He got enough urine on his hands that he decided that he needed to dry them, but still chose to not wash his hands.
People are gross.
Every time I use a public restroom I'm reminded how much better urethral health I must have compared to the average man... The sounds of sheer pain some of these guys make while literally just taking a whiz is... I dunno, saddening? I wouldn't even know that lots of men moan and shudder and groan while peeing if it weren't for public restrooms. What are the normie men doing to their cocks???
