You can make the meme for most countries in the west. The past couple days have been us celebrating the latest Banksy performative protest as if that's done anything more than be more art in the ocean of art to be snooty about socially and continue on with the ever weak art based protest. 30 years of performative art centric leftist culture and 30 years of neoliberalism shifting further and further to the right
Careful, every American on Lemmy has about 6 or 7 thought-stopping cliches ready to defend their cowardly fucking inaction.
Murican here. I just lack a spine like the rest of my countrymen. No sense making excuses.
The fact that you're posting this means you're not dead or in prison, which thought-stopping cliche will you use to explain your cowardly inaction?
Probably don't want to die tbh
Do you expect people who are living paycheck to paycheck to give up their lives to die, be homeless or permanently disabled?
Do you imagine people in Nepal to have big savings accounts and investments in NVidia?
Truth is - if you are not bothered enough by the situation to risk your confort and way of life, then you are ok with the situation and accept it.
Honestly? People who are living paycheck to paycheck have MORE reasons to risk everything and FAR fewer excuses for allowing the status quo to persist. Who the fuck do you think should be burning shit down if not the people most victimized by it?
Criticize them to the core, and they write a robot replier just for you.
Set fire to the Capitol. Got it
trump didn't give a blanket "y'all either obey me or you're out" to all social media, blocking all except tiktok, no wonder 'muricans are still sleeping
What happened in Nepal? Ive not been in lemmy, or news sites in almost a month. Im very out of the loop on this one.
I love Lemmy and I enjoy that it's less of a constant news+politics festival than Reddit, but the downside of that is that you won't get exposure to some pretty important events just by browsing the top posts. You have to go to a news comm, can't rely on the community to put the most important news at the top. Many days there have been huge news events and the top Lemmy posts are all comics and memes - nothing wrong with that! The community can be whatever it wants. But as a user , especially if you're coming from Reddit, you've gotta know to supplement your news with other sources (which really you should be doing anyways).
Yeah, I get that. Thats not what this is though. Ive been on lemmy ever since the reddit API exodus fiasco. This was an intentional, out of the loop moment on my part. Ive been so focused on whats going on in the news over the last 6 months, it was starting to affect my mental health, so I took a break from lemmy.
Thanks! All caught up now. Go Nepal citizens!
Lemmy is so USA centric they did not notice the people sponsoring Nepal's protests are the exactly the same people in charge of USA right now.
The ban on USA big tech industry is a sovereignty statement, and every country should do that, USA is literally stealing data from other countries, since data is the new gold, the name of the game is digital colonialism, you should read more about that if you have more than two brain cells
Source?
Second part - Every country that currently has the capability is “stealing” data. I’m not deflecting from the US’s actions, but let's do the math here and pick something that everyone isn’t in the same glass house together.
Yeah, sure let's keep pretending that there's not only few countries in the world where the US CAN NOT steal data because they LOST a war
As I said Lemmy is very US centric, you guys are not able to look at any thing else other than your own aases
bullshit
US would never do that, right? LMAO
We tried in 2020, libs quickly coopted the movement by pretending to be at the front of it and that we had less radical demands, defused it by pretending to agree to those demands, and then supported republicans in opposing any of the demands, with Biden telling states to divert covid funds to police. Before I left, people seemed too tired and beaten down to really try again.
Haha, yeah they sure did a number on the heavily armed, militarized Nepal Police! Then after that all of the heavily armed radicalized civilians fell like dominoes!
Oh wait, they don't have any of that. Must have made their job much easier.
Yesterday, the police opened fire at the protesters and killed 19 people.
Today, the latest official numbers from the government speak of 30 dead and over 1000 injured treated in hospitals.
Light many lamps and gather round his bed.
Lend him your eyes, warm blood, and will to live.
Speak to him; rouse him; you may save him yet.
He’s young; he hated war; how should he die
When cruel old campaigners win safe through?
But death replied: “I choose him.” So he went,
And there was silence in the summer night;
Silence and safety; and the veils of sleep.
Then, far away, the thudding of the guns.
Wtf, this is mob attacks burning down their capital and protestors dieing in the streets.
When that society is better, let us know. Its just arson and murder now
Nepal: landlocked country, 31 million people, 147 thousand sq KMS. United States: extends across a continent, 340 million people, 9.8 million sq kms
Just some reference points, draw your own conclusions
Yeah, cuz Nepal is known for it's military.
People really love criticizing the US and fair enough, but man it's tiring seeing people lambasting the US for not violently resisting when we actively are and it's just being suppressed by the media. Without cooperation from the head of the executive branch we can't storm congress, but we're doing a whole fuckload despite that...
when we actively are
Examples?
Without cooperation from the head of the executive branch
We cannot protest the government without support from the government.
Please give examples
No your not. Your volunteering to go into the street to be rounded up by the cops. It's the stupidest fucking thing. You literally have the equivalent of the printing Press giving to every person and you all think it's easier to organize people to publicly show up in a town three states over then it is to use get those people to use the propaganda machine to spread a message.
Yeah, it’s not like your country has based its entire identity for two centuries on its spirit of violently resisting tyranny against great odds
That's not the countries identity, that's a propaganda line.
Resisting foreign tyranny, specifically. The US certainly doesn't have that identity anymore.
This line is so perfect it needs to be a meme.
it’s not like your country has based its entire identity for two centuries on its spirit of violently resisting tyranny against great odds
Yeah they've haven't. Maybe you're drinking the koolaid. But only a fool would believe this.
Yes, for example the Gurkhas are from Nepal.
Or did you mean the regular army? They put down a major Maoist insurgency over the decade of 1996-2006, and have remained a significant force in Nepal. Historically they've played a major role in power transitions, such as the Rana era from 1846-1951 when military officer Jung Bahadur Rana overthrew the monarchy and established a hereditary prime ministership, and then again in King Mahendra’s 1960 coup when the monarchy took power until the 1990s.
But fortunately they've not been as prominently involved at playing "kingmaker" as the militaries of many other South Asian countries. They tend to act as a stabilizing force for whoever gets power by other means. I guess we'll see if that pattern continues to the current unrest.
Well yeah the gurkhas
At this point I'm pretty sure at least half the people cirtisizing lack of violence in America are feds trying to get people to spill incriminating evidence. You look stupid complaining online about not hearing about shit you can't say online. No one's booting up an onion router to brag to some shithead on lemmy about how they returned a tear gas canister to the cops.
There's a bunch of keyboard warriors demanding OTHERS take action. And I wish there was a mass tagging tool so we can root out these provocateurs.
Provocateurs is almost too generous a term for them, it's like opsec 101 not to post shit like that on extremely public forums no matter how anonymized they claim to be. It's basically like when your IT department secretly sends sketchy emails to test if you're dumb enough to click it.
This is very strange but I feel like I've read this exact comment before, word for word. Did you copy this from somewhere?
Nope, just wrote it.
