I think religion does cause harm in a variety of ways, but it's overly simplistic to think it would cause people to be awful on its own. I'm pretty sure the usual case is that it's a convenient excuse for people who already wanted to do evil shit
Yeah, I'm anything but religious myself but I have met way too many people who describe themselves as deeply religious volunteering at food pantries and homelessness outreach orgs to think it's entirely negative. If some magical thinking motivates you to do good in the world I don't have a problem with it.
