Anyone else looking to replace their accessories with USB-C once the got updated?
It seems that USB-C iPhones are on the horizon. There’s a high chance that the rest of the accessories that still uses Lightning port will get updated with USB-C port. I do have have the MagSafe Battery Pack and Duo Travel Charger. Having them all in USB-C seems like a breeze as you don’t need to bring Lightning cable anymore but the transition would be expensive. Anyone replacing all their Lightning accessories once they got updated?
Lightning was amazing when it came out, and helped to push USB-C. Still, its time has come. I’m anxious to ditch lightning and then only need usb-C for iphone, iPad, and laptop. Then I can use Apple Watch charger to charge watch and AirPods Pro 2. With some mag safe chargers around the house, I’ll be set.
I was considering it, but I can’t justify the upgrade from iPhone12 as it works fine. I did upgrade from iPad 2 to the mini which has usb c, as does my laptop. AirPods being lighting make it 50/50 usb c/lightning.
I’ve decided to go for this kind of thing in the mean time. Having the little nubbins is probably annoying, but a more budget friendly option for me to not have to always have two types of cables handy
I use a similar thing. I’ve got a variety of devices across Micro-USB, USB-C and Lightning. The nubbin is annoying, but it’s worth it to have few cables that charge all my devices. I definitely look forward to getting everything to Qi 2 and/or USB-C, but I’m not going to replace devices just for that.
I’m pretty excited for usb-c but you’re right, it’ll take a while. I’m still not entirely certain if I want to trade in my 11 since it’s still running just fine, but I also have the fiancés 12 mini, both our airpods, and my 9th gen iPad that we don’t plan on replacing anytime soon so we’ll need at least one lightning cable around the house. That said, wireless charging alleviates a lot of that since MagSafe is so convenient. Really just need the cable for the iPad at that point.
I already had a lot of USB-C stuff, then bought some lightning stuff as I had my first iPhone (13). I think I won't buy a new iPhone until they make em USB-C.
Lightning is great, but I’d love to standardize my go-bag. USB-C won’t make me upgrade my cracked iPhone 11, but it’ll be a nice perk once I get there.
It’s a fun meme for journalists but that very obviously sucks. Like a new car still often lacks wireless car play. Plus all the great things usb can eventually do.
Funnily you would have this because of the European Unions directive and at the time Apple was opposing the move, because they want them to get their Lightning license fee from all third party makers of accessories and this source of income would dry up once they switch to USB-C.
I am actually a bit surprised of how many people are supporting Apple's anti consumer behavior by buying their stuff.
Yeah. Unfortunately I have my my phone, and two pairs of headphones that aren’t usb-c. I’m afraid it will be years before I can have one cord to rule them all.
I can't see why they'd insist on keeping Lightning just for a few regions and not others. They'd end up losing way more money in supply line and accessory fragmentation than they'd gain in extra residuals from Lightning.
The logistical cost to have separate connectors in two different markets would hit the multi-million dollar range. The financial benefit to Apple of not adopting USB-C in any given market cannot be that significant. It comes down to accessory license fees. Apple is losing that market with losing Lightning, but Apple's image would take a hit from bisecting their connector across markets ("It just works" being their reputation and all — any unnecessary complexity harms that).
It's really hard to imagine it being worth it to Apple to make USB-C an EU-only thing. I don't know all the numbers, so I'm not going to say impossible. I would be very surprised though.
