Confused about linux as always
  • And even though this is lemmy, when I searched for “Ubuntu Help”, there’s no community named that. There’s also no community named “Linux help”. Which I find very very odd. Lemmy of all places you’d think would have a linux help community!

Have you been by !linuxquestions@lemmy.zip yet? Nevertheless, this community should work just as well.

There's also !linux4noobs@programming.dev or a community with the same name on Lemmy World. When specificity in a search fails, falling back to broader/more basic terms may help (e.g. searching for Ubuntu or Linux).

Should bot comments contribute to the comment count for regular users?
  • I think separating them improves the user experience for regular users, which I think counts as a real advantage. As I wrote in the body text:

As-is seeing an indication of a comment for a post only for it to turn out to be a bot is slightly disappointing at best, and mildly confusing at worst when their display has been disabled.

It's a small detail, but small details add up when it comes to the user experience.

    10
  • For admins and moderators, keeping the comment counts including bot comments visible (especially in a moderators' own communities) may be valuable, but not sure if it's all that valuable for ordinary users.

Would it be possible to make it so bot comments don't add to the counts for regular users, or at least for those that have disabled the display of bot posts/comments? As-is seeing an indication of a comment for a post only for it to turn out to be a bot is slightly disappointing at best, and mildly confusing at worst when their display has been disabled.

What do you use to label/tag similar looking cables?
  • If I just wanted to label it, colored tape. I don’t know if colored masking tape is ideal – my experience has been that masking tape left on a surface for a long time leaves some goo, though Goo Gone might get that off. But I suspect that it’d stay on the thing for a long time.

Yeah, the gooey factor is one of the only reasons I've been somewhat iffy on using masking tape for this purpose. However if it holds up to where it doesn't need replacement, could be a nonfactor all things considering.

    reMarkable Paper Pro
  • I wonder, how might they reduce the cost of these? It's a cool concept, and I can understand some of the cost, but when your alternatives (simple pen & paper or marker & dry erase board) are substantially cheaper it makes this a harder sell.

Which anime do you enjoy with a mostly adult cast of characters?
  • For anyone else perusing this thread, don't sleep on this one! It's a solid recommendation. I'd watched it prior to seeing this comment, and its art style is slick as hell with an interesting story to boot.

Which anime do you enjoy with a mostly adult cast of characters?
  • This was harder to answer than I thought, pushing up to 20 eliminates a lot of contenders I think.

Maybe so, though that's why I tried to relax it with 18 and older as well as mostly vs only adults. If there's some younger characters I don't mind, but I thought I'd ask about anime with a primary cast of older characters for a little change of pace.

    Appreciate the suggestion!

  • By adult I mean over 18-20 years of age and with adult appearances. Nothing against anime with younger characters, but interested in finding some with older characters.

Which long-running comedies would you recommend?
  • King of the Hill is definitely an acquired taste. Some episodes are easy to bounce off of, but after a few you might find yourself enjoying it. Good suggestion!

  • Which kinds did you have in mind? Some that occur to me have far too brief interactions (or times to interact) to invite those opportunities.

    What are these wires?
  • Not sure what these wires are either, but the frayed ones seem like possibly electrical. Do you have a multimeter to help check?

Openvibe combines Mastodon, Bluesky and Nostr into one social app | TechCrunch
  • The pre-seed stage startup is backed by angel investors and NYC accelerator Wolf, which Openvibe attended last year.

Openvibe is available as a free app on iOS and Android, but plans to experiment with a desktop version. The app will later introduce a subscription plan to generate revenue.

Have any services like this managed to develop a sustainable business model, especially after taking on investment?

  • Rewatching Venture Bros. in order after only having seen it on tv years ago aired out of order makes a massive difference, too. I didn't realize how many episodes I'd seen were really from earlier seasons.

What made everyone move to Bluesky or Threads instead of Mastodon?
  • Does Bluesky? Have they been running marketing? Much of what I've seen/heard of it has been more a result of Twitter imploding and people bringing up alternatives than any concerted marketing pushes.

edited for clarity, realized I'd overlooked Threads mention

User friendly guides for understanding Windows/MacOS/Linux system error logs?

While sometimes logs aren't too difficult to follow, there's also often times they're inscrutable to those not in the weeds of their respective OS. So I was wondering if anyone around here might have some pointers to guides or the like for where to find, and help understanding, different system error logs.

On Windows there's Event Viewer to some extent, and on Linux I think it's typically /var/log (and some distros may have a GUI System Log Viewer?). Not sure of MacOS.

Thanks in advance for any replies with pointers to resources!
