Space Boat III - my ride to Fulgora, then Vulcanus
  • Of course! I retrofitted it to blue belts right after posting the picture, but here it is:

https://pastebin.com/ewTrb8VP (lemmy struggled a bit to have it in a comment text)

EDIT: I don't have access to fix this now, but I noticed I somehow managed to remove a green cable going from the hub to the ✔️ decider combinator's input. That needs to be added for it to understand it has enough ammo, sorry :)

I'd recommend the following changes to use it with cheaper tech:

    • Remove two thrusters to put less load on the turrets
    • Change inserters to yellow - it does not need anything faster
    • Remove two smelters to work reasonably with regular panels
    • Reduce to yellow belts - it does not need anything faster
    • remove walls and supports on the sides to reduce cost - all the potential problems hit the front

    Notes on usage:

    • If setting up automation, the decider logic will give you a ✔️=1 signal to indicate it is fueled up and has enough ammo for a return trip
    • If you have less bullet damage research than I did, consider reducing it down to one thruster
    • If it's still struggling with production on Fulgora orbit, just make it return after 30 seconds or so - it has enough bullets stockpiled to get back

  • They are there on the odd chance that a small asteroid manages to sneak past my turrets. A smashed wall is easily replaced, but a smashed part of infrastructure is disaster.

  • It's fine! Been making 30 fully automated round trips so far. :)

Fuel tanks are exactly enough. Solar is running a bit weak in Fulgora, but it is enough for production to run so it refills itself.

  • My first working platform that has now taken me to my first two planets!

After the sad fate of Space Boat which went through the asteroid field like pudding through a cheese grater, and Space Boat II which did not have enough production capabilities to ward off wandering asteroids at Fulgora, the Space Boat III worked perfectly.

With the ability to travel safely and refuel and rearm itself in orbit around any of the starter planets, it is now running autonomous supply transport between Nauvis, Fulgora and Vulcanus without needing any oversight.

At some point I'll have to make a platform with bigger storage and stronger production capabilities so it can travel faster, but for now it does a solid job. :)

Why is artillery locked behind space research?
  • Apart from the pure gameplay balance aspect, the artillery cannons are made from tungsten alloys to make them wear resistant. Earth has naturally occuring tungsten, Nauvis doesn't. :)

  • Nice! My first-ship mistake was to fill it to the brim with engines, so it faceplanted every single asteroid at light speed before the guns could handle them or even reload

  • I realized the cargo landing pad provides radar without power. A remote driven tank with roboport might be able to do some emergency maintenance.

  • Ya, I don't think I could even afford supplying the ammo by rocket. It stacks like ass. :D

I have production of both fuel and ammo on board. It just uses ammo a lot faster than it is able to produce it. It is a small Space Boat going very fast, so I could also alleviate it a bit by taking away a few thrusters. But for now it just builds up a stockpile in parking orbit before travelling.

Really loving Fulgora's puzzles! The backwards production chains, randomized item processing, being forced to build separately on multiple islands... It feels fresh and fun.

  • I was very anxious about that scenario, haha.

I made sure the base ran entirely off a huge supply of nuclear power, that currently mined resouece patches still had a lot of fat on them, and cleaned biter based so that the perimeter wall wasn't handling very heavy waves before leaving.

  • My favorite part is the peacefulness of it all. Everyone and everything on that planet is long dead. No biters. No evolution. No bulldozer worms. No pentatanks.

  • My GOD so many rocks on the way.

Space Boat v1 had 4 guns, and died immediately.

Space Boat v2 had 10 guns, and manged to barely get there by manually pausing thrust several times, then getting smashed in orbit by Fulgora's drifting medium asteroids because it ran out of ammo.

Space Boat v3 has 28 guns protected by walls and a stockpile of ammo. It can get there and back again. Time will tell if it has production capabilities to survive parking in Fulgora orbit.

Throughout the week, slow buildup of joint pain, feverish feeling, lack of appetite, swollen throat, buzzing head, torpor, lack of focus. Today I am just broken.

These are all (for me) normal physical reactions to overextending myself socially or spending time in sensory intense environments for any amount of time. They are also symptons I would get if I caught the head cold that is going around.

It feels extremely silly that I have literally zero idea if I have a cold or not.

Anyway, treatment is same either way: Take it easy for a while. Mostly wanted to share my frustrating confusion and maybe hear if others have similar experiences and how they manage. :)

This is part strong recommendation and part wanting to know thoughts of others who have read it. :)

Fern Brady is a scottish comedian who grew up with undiagnosed autism in a very catholic small town.

It's a brutally honest and personal story, and she manages to write everything in a way that I found captivating. She can describe situations of absolute torture in a way that makes them seem both heartbreaking, and almost funny in their absurdity. Like a scene where she got recommended an app to help her with meltdowns and describes how she is crying and punching her fist bloody against her living room wall, while with her other hand opening an app and seeing suggestions like "think of a puppy!", "count to ten and think of the last nice thing you ate!"

For me, the description of a years long struggle to push through a medical system with little and outdated understanding of autism resonnated deeply.

    factorio.com Friday Facts #413 - Gleba | Factorio

IntroductionAlbert Making a new world in Factorio is relatively "easy", just create a new set of tilesets for the ground, add some new models of trees, create a bunch of new decoratives, some decals (optional), a new skin for the cliffs (optional), and bam! you get a new planet. Well, to be fair,...

    Music reminds me of Terraria!
